I can't tell which pair of eyes I'm supposed to stare at sturnly.
Also, I don't think I can hold my fire until I see the whites of their eyes...

Only in some SD version of the HL1 model and a beta concept art for HL2
I've seen too many frigg'n houndeye models, but this one seems to do the best justice.
And yes, I remember there were supposed to be some kind of whisker type things in the eye area.

front legs look anatomic, but back one is like a tail, thin and weak.
besides some hair around eyes/in eyesocket will be justified by term of anatomy - some head antennae (not to mention that hound eye concept is something called Sound Dog) will look good. and for god's sake, why so weak? legs are disproportionate, it's still a dog-like creature... google for images of some smooth dog breeds, you'll get it.
I love it, a very nice model, all the way to the feat, but I think there's too much contrast between the blue veins and the green body, perhaps tone down the blue or brighten the body?
Actually, the latest version looks different from what you see on this render.
This contrast that you mention has always annoyed me, so some time ago i took the original texture (made by Marcus) and tweaked it.
The skin looks brighter and more yellowish now, making it all feel less dissonant.
