I've recently grown pretty fond of the Tau, and it really began to bum me out that they weren't totally in Dawn of War 2.

With this mod, I aim to change this.

This mod will let you play as the Tau in multiplayer matches! Choose between 2 commanders and lead your strike force to victory. For the Greater Good!

Please note that I am by no means a game designer, and a lot of the things I did for this mod were simply because I thought they'd be cool, fun or both. Basically, balance is not my forte, and it really was not my main concern. That said, I tried to keep things from being too powerful, probably to varying degrees of success...

A big thanks to enlargingcloud (and by extension, clock) and Adam for providing models for me to mess around with, rig, and animate!

Tau Overview

Feature 1 comment

The Basics

The Tau are a race almost entirely focused on ranged combat. Their weapons have great range and damage, but limited unit vision and lower innate accuracy will have units struggle on their own. Proper scouting and efficient marking of targets are essential - you will need to have units work together to get the most out of the Tau arsenal.

A quick breakdown of the race:

Pros:

  • Strong ranged weapons
  • Very mobile units in the form of battlesuits
  • Most units have options to help against most targets

Cons:

  • Very weak in melee
  • Very weak to suppression

Commanders

XV8 Shas'O

A well rounded commander that can be outfitted to fulfill various roles

XV81 Shas'O

A support oriented commander that focuses on assisting allies from just behind the front lines

Units

Tier 1

Ethereal - Secondary commander with support abilities

Fire Warriors - Basic ranged unit. Very long range, but limited sight range

Pathfinders - Scouting units that can paint enemies with marker lights. Very good sight range

Drone Fire Support Team - Suppression team. Poor sight range, low mobility

Kroot Auxiliaries - Basic melee squad

Agile Crisis Suit Team - Light weight mobile battlesuits. Can be upgraded into specialist roles

Tier 2

Crisis Battlesuit Team - Versatile mobile battlesuits

TY7 Devilfish - Transport vehicle. Can reinforce nearby allies and serve as a retreat point

TX78 Sky Ray - Long ranged artillery unit. Can work with marker lights for accurate barrages

XV88 Broadside - A heavily armored battlesuit that sacrifices mobility for sheer firepower

Tier 3

TX7 Hammerhead - Anti-tank vehicle with very long range

Life kinda got in the way, but I'm back in the saddle! Though tbh, if stuff kicks up again, I'll probably just release what I have

Hey Short_Stack! Nice work! Appreciate if you could credit the modder Clocktickin whom you obtained the Tau models from, in your mod.

You betcha! Though to be straight, I did strip some of these myself from DoW1 / other games (thanks to tools made by others, ofc)

Hey this is looking nice, will you be adding in Gue'vesa?

Thanks! No Gue'vesa just yet, but I wouldn't say it isn't possible. I still need to think of a third commander, and right now I'm leaning towards the third commander having lots of access to auxiliaries, so they'd fit right in there!
