G-man has a plan to betray the government and you, Gordon Freeman, have been jailed by him. A fun and simple story.
The level design initially seems a little weak but with each map the brushwork gets better and better. There are nice set pieces further on like a yard with a pool that has a secret staircase beneath and a submarine dock. Inventive and fun stuff for its time. The enemies are mainly hgrunts with some aliens here and there.
Despite fun levels this is a pretty short mappack with only three maps. The ending is pretty abrupt as well but considering there is a part two, these aren't really issues. One thing that can frustrate the player is the fan puzzle. There is a fan that you need to stop to pass. You press the button and if it stops at a wrong angle that you cannot fit through, you have to crawl all the way back from vents into the room that has the button and come back to see whether it's in the right position or not.
Disregarding the minor fan annoyance, the real problem of the pack is its "what do I do?" moments. There are at least three places you can get stuck, not knowing what to do. Some hints:
- Remember you can pull objects.
- Don't forget to check every corner. Sides, back, everything.
Overall, despite its short length and sometimes cryptic objectives this is a nicely made, if a bit clunky mappack. The creator, Jack Amano, has improved his mapping with every mappack / mod he's released so there are definitely better works of this mapper, this doesn't mean you should skip this mappack though. It's a fun fifteen minute adventure.
