Very moody - though, not sure how well that fits with the good mood that's supposed to come after you beat GLaDOS! It just looks rainy and sad, which you shouldn't feel after beating the game and escaping (albeit for mere moments!)

Also, the trees are a bit repetitive and grid-like, all placed on a flat plane too. This is why Valve made use of cards in the background :P

Actually, when you think about it, it was never supposed to feel 'optimistic' considering the Combine have taken over the world around Portal 1. And Aperture is located at the epic center of the Black Mesa Incident, so i imagine it'd be very gloomy and almost dead.

The black mesa incident happened at Black Mesa which is not near Aperture

I'm not sure if you're being tongue in cheek on purpose or not, i was being sarcastic and i admit it, but you keep saying Black Mesa is nowhere near Aperture as if to counter the argument that the Incident affected Aperture, the portal storms affected everywhere, and this is of course why GLaDOS kept the facility hidden and remained in obscurity. Understand now? I don't want to come off as confusing, so i hope that's cleared up some confusion at least.

My point was that the end of Portal 1 occurred right around the time of the Black Mesa incident occurred so the Combine most likely did not spread to Aperture by then.

Oh, i wasn't talking about the Combine, though they did in fact spread around Aperture, i was talking about the Xen aliens from HL1, i don't really see how GLaDOS could keep them out, i understand by the time of P1 she probably incinerated them, but it's logical that there'd be signs of them. Somewhere.
