Five Elite Mercenaries are send to an Island in middle of the 1980'. The Task: Find and Eliminate a local Drug Baron. Features: new Physic, real Sunmovement, Day/Night Change, Hunger/Food system, realistic (!) Weather system, Light/Dark viewing system for AI, 5 different Fractions on the Island. Complete Realistic simulation of nearly all things, including Sleep. New weapons, new Vehicles. Vehicles driving system is now exact (!) like GTA IV , FireSystem,... this mod is Heavily inspired by GTA, IGI, FarCry.
now player have footstep skid marks (you see on soft terrain your shoe profiles)
you see now on sand or grass (like the screenshot shows) the profile from shoes XD for player its only for better immersion, once included, it feels "wrong" if you dont see them anymore, same like the tire skidmark routine.
inserting that for AI would be interesting because you could see if a AI have passed the way short before.
think about the possibilities:
if you KNOW there is a patrol route, but you doesnt know if the patrol already passed away, you can search for skidmarks!

I like it, but if you think it's too much of a cheat couldn't you just make them fainter?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, thinking twice... this idea is really good ^^ i already have it coded so that i can do such things like different faint depending on game difficulty level ...
but on the other hand: the screenshot proves that the steps are only visible if you are already stand very close to them.
or mean you things like visible if you knee down and look closer ?

I think it's good, an probably the only way to know if it would make the game to easy is if you test it enough. I think it's good to give tools to the player such as this because it doesn't mean he doesn't have to think about where they could be anymore, but it does mean he can sometimes predict it and plan around that. It's better than having binoculars which once marked, permanently update the position of enemies. Just my opinion.

in opcl binocular doesnt have enemy detection, no audiozoom and only 2x or 4x zoom step. also enemies are never tagged on radar, so that footprint would be the onliest hint to the player.
have recoredet a short video which shows the "cheat". i'm still not shure about it :/
the problem is what you have mentioned: "to plan and predict" means: player knows that there IS someone, and he know the direction. without that, the gameplay is much more immersive, because you doesnt even know if there is a Mercenary around (yeah, have also killed the cheating standart music theme routine which spoilers too the enemie status^^).
