Dwarves of the Iron Hills

Greetings, Companions of Edain!

Today we have a very special treat for you. Something that kept our community up for countless nights. It is one of the most often voiced request we ever got. Rest assured now: We listened.

Today we present to you the new Iron Hills Soldiers of Edain!

Dwarves of the Iron Hills

We had many long and passionate discussions about these dwarves, with you in the forums, as well as among ourselves. Some were disappointed with the movie adaption, others had a peculiar kind of enthusiasm for it. Because of this we had a hard time deciding what to do about them. In the end though, we kept to our fundamental principles: To find a balance in which we can combine as much of the books and movies as possible.

Dwarves of the Iron Hills

Therefore the Dwarves of the Iron Hills received some slight changes for Edain. The base armor style is derived from Dáin Ironfoot's noble armor, but altered in certain details. We deliberately kept our classic red and grey color scheme so that they will still be easily identifyable even at a distance, and keep some of their former Edain personality. Also the forked beards described in the books had to be kept, though at a more practical length.

Dwarves of the Iron Hills

Since their new visual style (heavily armored) is at odds with their playstyle so far (light and fast), we took this as an opportunity to overhaul their basic gameplay as well. The new Iron Hills will have a focus on defence. The Guardians will be able to upgrade their small shields from the movie to a tower shield that blocks arrow more effectively. The Phalanx will be equipped with shields as well, in order to form shieldwalls as seen in the Battle of Five Armies. Their ranged soldiers will carry heavy crossbows to better defend their position, instead of the former swift bows.

Dwarves of the Iron HillsDwarves of the Iron Hills

Of course there are many more changes happening inside the Iron Hills, as well as in the other two Dwarven Dwellings. Changing one Underground Kingdom starts an avalanche of necessary changes all over our Dwarven faction. We felt the time was right for another groundbreaking revision of the Khazad.

So stay tuned for many more Renders and Updates on the Dwarves in the following days!

And if you liked this update, as always we'd be honored if you would consider giving us your vote for Mod of the Year 2015! Keep in mind that votes by registered accounts count a lot more.

Great work!
I always wanted to Arnor was a separate faction, but recently I got the idea to do an alternate for each faction, the battle on the cards for the time of Arnor. Maybe someone already suggest to such an idea, but still.
Gondor gets Arnor.
Mordor becomes Angmar.
Isengard is becoming a good faction with people and wizards.
Elves do not change.
If you think you can come up with is interesting.
Thank you. Good luck.

I swear, the team has changed nearly everything about the Dwarves since they were first introduced in 4.1. Its a good thing they were released first!

A definitely wise and brave decision, that, I'm sure, will have a great and positive impact in the developing course of the Edain Mod.
And, why not, it might be a pilot change which could influence in the future other worthy Hobbit-related suggestions that can be recalled (and I think that there are many still) :P

Thanks to the Edain Team, and all the people involved in this debate in the forum who constantly showed their support from the beginning, since the establishment of the English Community.
And, thanks also to the ones who opposed it and had different opinions, contributing though to keep the matter well alive ;)

This will probably be my last needed comment of gratitude about this :D
In the end, thus, I would like to highlight again the invitation towards anyone to participate in constructive and serious debates in the forum, since, as you now see, a lot of things could manage to be implemented, and, who knows, of a better quality than their original versions initially were in one's mind, via the contributions of the others.

There is now no reason to not vote for you guys for MOTY. You are the best of all mods and I don't think any mod, be it for BFME or any other game, can compete with the awesomeness you just made. Thank you very much ET, you made a lot of fans very happy today :). I just hope that you guys made and play with these models with fun, and not hate it because I remember that you told the community that you didn't like the movie design. But just looking at the quality of the models I can already see that you made these with love :).

As far as I know, the proposal already had supporters within the Edain Team.
So, I believe that the problem was trying to find a proper balance among different views.
But, these are obviously only speculations of mine; maybe, some direct statements about the developing process of this suggestion might help.
Adamin, if I'm not wrong, said that the idea took definitely longer in conceiving and creating it than a common one, also, I think, considering the heated discussions on the forum surrounding it.

I agree with you, Fredius, they are indeed made with love ;)

Now we do only need elven warriors with the ability to jump over the shield wall. Obviously for the effect only, we would never need the help of pesky woodfolk.

Your designs are much more beautiful than those in BotFA, and god knows I love them.
And that's not even the best of it! You are willing to rework all three dwarven realms! What a Christmas present. :)

Lord of Mordor. Will the Team consider about changing hero picture for Dain from the Iron hills? It can look the same as Dain's from Erebor, only younger, the original one. There can also be new sound sets for Dain, from Battle of five armies Extended edition, as well as pics. By the way, I never liked current models of Iron hill Dwarves. These are way better. Great update. Voted and waiting for more updates and fast replay regarding my question. Cheers!

Awesome! The Iron Hills sub-faction has improved by leaps and bounds since it was released, and it already was great!

I am especially glad you are incorporating the tower shield and the emphasis on defense. Oh and I love the new outpost, gives a distinct flavor to the Iron Hills.

Let's give those Orcs a good hammering!

Will these changes be released when Angmar is and will the changes for the other 2 dwarven factions be ready, as well? If so, this is shaping up to be quite a release, whenever it hits.

"Something that kept our community up for countless nights"

Countless is "lesser" word to descirbe our desire for these models!

And thank you for your decison to implement them into this mod.
You bought us presents before holidays, and I hope you will also gain some which you deserve in these modding terms.
I have already voted, if I could I would give few more votes from my account. Simply you deserve all creadit!

P.S.I also hope Lord Dain as leader of these new skined dwarves will get some summon ability polishing, for example those "Slayers" from book.

Best Regards,

I don't know if this has been explained, already, but I noticed something, while playing as Arnor. The description for Carthaen's ability to change a ranger battalion into hill guards says they'll get increased melee damage. However, the unit is ranged and doesn't have an option to switch between swords and bows. Is this right? Also, I tried to play against Lothlorien on the Mount Gram map, and the game crashed each time. Is there an issue with the elven AI?
