Report RSS Edain 4.5.3: Lothlórien - Part 2

Have a look at some more revised models of Lothlórien in the Edain Mod 4.5.3.

Posted by on

Greetings, companions of Edain!

We look back on an exciting and intensive tournament. Of course we didn't sit around idly in the meantime, but used the time to deal with a few things that were important to us. We'd like to start today with the second part of the Lothlórien update.

Lothlórien - Part 2

In the last Lothlórien update we already presented you the graphical revisions of the buildings, as well as some improvements for the Galadhrim and some heroes. Although the community has given us very positive feedback, there have been a few comments regarding the bows and Haldir's hands. As it is our concern to satisfy our fans, we dedicated ourselves to these wishes and took this opportunity to make some further graphical revisions, which we would like to present to you today.

Troops of Lothlórien

The border guard units of Lórien have now received an improved skin with a new face. Previously they had the same face as the Imladris units. But to further differentiate them from each other, they now have the new face that we also gave the Galadhrim.

Besides this change, which affects all border guard units, the individual troops have also received small improvements.

  • The Border Guard Swordsmen (Sindarin: Megyr Glandirith Lórien) now carry a shorter version of the Galadhrim sword.
  • The Border Guard Pikemen (Sindarin: Eithyr Glandirith Lórien) now carry a pike that fits better into Lórien's image.
  • Probably the biggest change has been made to the archers. There have been complaints in the community that the archers' bow does not match the standard of the other weapons. Especially the typical double-bent form was missed. You have wished for it and you shall get it. With the longbow upgrade, the bows of the Border Guard Archers (Sindarin: Pengryn Glandirith Lórien) will no longer just get a new skin, but a completely new bow, which is now much closer to the movie.

Of course the Galadhrim Warriors of Lórien (Sindarin: Maethyr Galadhrim Lórien) will also receive the new bow with the longbow upgrade. Furthermore, the community has reported that the Galadhrim, which can be seen at the bottom of the Galadhrim quarter, is moving a little jerky. We have taken care of this one as well. The movements are now smoother and also four different animations are now played randomly one after the other, so that the Galadhrim doesn't always just repeat the same movement a thousand times.

We were already pretty satisfied with the design of the Caras Galadhon Guards (Sindarin: Tirryn Caras Galadhon), so we only adjusted a few small things. In addition to the new bow, they now have a different colour scheme, which is not only closer to the movie design, but also makes them more easily distinguishable from the rest of Lothlórien's armies. Furthermore, we decided to remove the model with the hood, as the hood should be a unique characteristic of Haldir's Border Guards and the Minstrels.

The Minstrels of Lórien (Sindarin: Pethril Lórien) haven't received any upgrade, because we were already satisfied with their current design. But for the sake of completeness we do not want to do without a picture.

Heroes of Lothlórien

After we had taken a look at all the units in Lórien, it was only logical for us to take another look at the heroes.

First of all we had Rúmil and Orophin, but they are already to our complete satisfaction after the last adjustment. Therefore we did not make any new changes for them

Haldir on the other hand still needed some minor adjustments. Besides the new bow, which he has now also received, we have again taken up the eternal quarrel topic: Haldir's hands. Despite the fact that the hands have been reduced several times, the community still justifiably complained that the hands were much too big. Fun fact: We have now reduced the hands by another 15%, which means that they are now almost 40% smaller than the original EA model.

Celeborn, Lord of Lothlórien, like Rúmil and Orophin, has already undergone a significant improvement in the last revision and this time did not require any adaptation. We have nevertheless made a few small contrast and colour adjustments to his face so that it is no longer so extremely reddish.

Galadriel, Lady of Light, still had the original model and skin from the base game. This had to be changed urgently. While the model itself needed only minor adjustments to the hands and arms, the skin had to be improved significantly. Before, the skin had only little contrast and especially the face was almost one colour only.

Furthermore, we added a different skin for the blessed Galadriel, so that you can now also distinguish it visually directly from the "normal" Galadriel. We decided to use a variation of the grey overdress from the Hobbit. But, since a pure grey robe looks rather blurry from a distance, we put the belt over the robe and let the white dress sparkle out a little bit at the bottom.

By the way: We have also adapted the Palantir portraits so that she now has unique portraits for each form. Normal, Galadriel the Blessed and the Storm Queen

We hope you liked this update and are looking forward to your feedback as always!

Your Edain Team

Nice work! Now, can you do the same for Gondor, please? Units like the Tower Guard look really outdated. All the other factions have received their visual updates, but not Gondor proper. They need it the most of the factions, to be honest.

Furthermore, small nitpick, but Haldir's face does not look like Haldir from the movies. What is the inspiration for his face?

They are! Each of her three forms is now differentiated from the others, in the best of the ways.

Particularly, her blessed appearance's concept detaches a bit from the usual over-lit depiction of the Lady, and I personally love how it has been given a new interpretation: a more 'vulnerable', melancholy portrayal, after renouncing the seduction of the One Ring and accepting her inexorable return to Valinor.

I'm glad you liked the update. You can certainly expect more graphical overhauls in the future :)

You're absolutely right. I love the concept behind Galadriel's forms and, along with these new changes, she's now one of the most interesting heroes in the whole game!

Thanks for sharing, I can't wait to hear more!

Hope you're staying safe and healthy my friend. :)

I don't want to be harsh, but only things I look forward to in this mod are the "submods" for harad and khand, dunland or else.
The overhaul of economy system didnt suit me well, now I feel like the game is more passive than before.
I must say, the dominant mod for me now is Age of the Ring now because of not only "remodelling" ongoing stuff but actually making and showcasing new factions and other great things. I know you are short on staff tho.
Shame we dont have Dagor Dagorath anymore, havent played it much, now I know I am idiot, it was the best mod of LotR here.

Dagor Dagorath was an abomination. Not a mod but a Frankenstein's monster of stolen assets all based off Edain 3.8.1 and bloated beyond belief. If you don't enjoy Edain that's fine but your comment is pointless and shows that you only want to complain. I believe the saying goes "If you don't have anything useful to say it's best to stay quiet".

Never said I didn't enjoy edain.
Dagor Dagorath may have been abomination by itself, or the people who created it, but I was not talking about the "edain" part there, but the "Dagor Dagorath" part there (meaning ancient heroes, units, Valar etc.) and as far as I know, these were not included in Edain. Sure, they may have stolen it from different mods too, but that is not to my knowledge.
And as far as I am concerned, the way community grows is from sharing and coluding with each other, it doesn't have to be pleasant but we are not enemies, so keep that in mind. :)

Dagor is all stolen stuff, down to the last unit. They made some modifications here and there but none of the units is original concepts of theirs. The Valar and ancient heroes are stolen from the Fourth Age mod.

Oh okay, didn't know about that mod - never heard of it.

4.5 offers a lot of other new things like the spellbooks, reworked heroes or horde maps, to only name a few things - have you checked those out yet? Not liking the new economy system is fine, that's a matter of taste afterall.
Saying that Dagor Dagorath was the best mod of LotR isn't. It was made by thieves who stole all the good parts from Edain and other mods and then pretended it was their own work. Taking it down and starting over was the best thing those guys did.

Sure, I heard they stole from you and that was the main point why it was shut down (I think) - but the "Dagor Dagorath" part, of the Valar and ancient heroes like Fingolfin, Turin, Gothmog balrog - that's what I meant. Not sure whether it was stolen or not but it was not shown in edain's work anywhere, so I guess not - maybe from other mods which I have not heard of. - Anyway I think there still exists Dagor Dagorath mod on the russian servers, but that's too complicated for me, and well, can't speak russian (or read lol).

Regarding the first part of comment - well spellbook ok, nothing too amazing, for example for gondor I think the "middle" spell is useless, because once you get Boromir and spam his units, you don't need anything else except for few Ithilien archers and trebuchets. (that is just one example)
Reworked heroes, well I am not saying it's not worth mentioning but their role is pretty much the same.
Horde maps, well, as solo player, I guess i can't experience the amazingness to the fullest, so cant say.
Also played many of the Easter Eggs which were found, some of em found by myself.
It's not like I don't like this mod or that I haven't played it, pretty much playing it since 3.x I think.
So for me, in big scale, is not exceptionally important rework of Rumil and Orophin, when I nearly don't use them, but rather try new heroes, new factions and mechanics - that is what I liked about the Dagor Dagorath (even tho stolen concept) and other few mods. I feel like it's too static and I don't mean the building plots, that's amazing, but the units, heroes, economy buildings, special buildings - very nice thing I liked somewhere was concept of an "Inn" where you could get heroes and special units, not hobbits or some random units from other factions.
Not complaining, just stating my point of view, if you disagree, you are free to comment. :)

Gondor central spell is the most popular central spell of all factions amoung online players.
Those all reworks did huge work, and now playing pvp is totaly diferent from what it was. I recommend you to try for yourself and start playing pvp to check how changes have affected that.

Thanks for your feedback. I would like to address a few points. First of all, I would like to agree with you that the modding community should benefit from sharing material and supporting each other. However, the point is mutual respect for each other's work. You are welcome to send requests to other teams and ask for permission to use certain material. But doing this without prior arrangements is really not good manners. So the whole situation with Dagor Dagorath has nothing to do with hostility but simply with disappointment due to the lack of decency and respect for the work of others.

Furthermore, it is not the case that we only rework things and do not add anything new. Some things have already been mentioned, such as the new Spellbooks, Horde maps and the economic system, which have been completely redesigned in 4.5. We are aware that these points are not a priority for everyone, but especially with the Spellbooks, well thought-out and appropriate concepts were important to us. In general, we in the Edain team believe that there is little point in adding things just for the sake of adding. Everything we add is discussed internally in great detail beforehand. Whenever there is an idea to implement something new, we always check if there are interesting and useful concepts that would justify implementing it. For example, we would not add a new hero just because we like that particular design. If there is no need, because it conceptually adds nothing new or unique to the faction, it would only unnecessarily expand the game.

Of course, what you should also never forget is that the Edain Team is a group of people who do all these things as a hobby. A hobby should be fun, and as we all know, everyone has other things to enjoy. For example, I really enjoy designing things for Elves and Dwarves, but the Misty Mountains are not my thing. If I had to do things for the Misty Mountains for weeks, I would probably lose the interest at some point. And of course it also had an enormous influence that many experienced modders have ended their modding careers and that there are only few newcomers.

I agree with you. If they've stolen the concepts and made it for their own, in that case it's disgraceful.
My point there was not stating they are saints and they didn't steal - just simply "putting" together the game as whole and making it different from others with new (stolen) features. I mean, Edain and AotR is placed in the Third Age more or so, and there isn't mod resembling the stolen concept of Dagor.
So it was "cool" only because we have never had anything like that to play here, that is pretty much all.

Of course, I wouldn't think otherwise, I know you are really looking at the game as a whole.
I was just trying to say, that I personally, would welcome more special units, because they are available in lore, and better connection among them.

And I am grateful, that you are doing it in your free time and it's something you do for "us" and "for free". I am happy we have people who still care about this game, not like EA. :)

More passive?

Sorry but it only means you dont even have the brains for a very complete and competitive game!

Bet you lost every game, due to the improved AI or lost at the very first minutes of the invasion maps!

But meh, you are here just to complain.

The thing is, how to make the game challenging is to have 3 or more brutals teamed up against you, and that's kinda boring because you can't do pretty much nothing - well, depending on the faction played.
If I may compare it to the AI in AotR, it's far more challenging and 2v1 is close to impossible.

I recommend on checking pvp community then, as I can assure you that it's far from boring. You can visit unnoficial edain discord where you can manage games with other players easier:
