The heavy reliance on capital ships has been relieved slightly! With an increase of fighters to a maximum of 10 per squadron and boosting starting squadron with one extra. The unit cap has also been raised to 50 for each faction allowing for an increased number of ships and squadrons meaning grander battles!

You right click on your game then go to properties, next you will go to set launch options and you will type MODPATH=Mods/********, replace the *'s with the mod folder names. For example right now I have MODPATH=Mods/SWTOR_MOD

The easiest thing to counter "heavy reliance on capital ships" is to reduce their accuracy versus fighters.
You can find it in HARDPOINTS.xml

Look at something like this:
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Fighter, 40.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Bomber, 40.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Transport, 7.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Corvette, 1.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Frigate, 1.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Capital, 1.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>
<Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance> Super, 1.0 </Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance>

Set Fire_Inaccuracy_Distance vs Fighter to let' say 70 points and that hardpoint will mostly miss starfighters.
So no need for more squadrons ;)

I do know how to change the inaccuracies of squadrons and such but I believe that fighters should be more of a proper resource throughout the entire game rather then just cannon fodder and distractions. And besides, gunners don't have terrible aim, they are in the navy!

They may be decent shots, but they would have to hit extremely fast, extremely small targets at distances of, in some cases, over a mile.

Actually that's totally incorrect..

Capital ships should have better accuracy vs fighters than even fighters vs fighters... Capital ships are massive slow moving, stable and armoured platforms firing turbo lasers (which move at the speed of light). With even a half decent fire control computer, they'd hardly ever miss within a 10km radius.

The reason for this is because since the "bullet" laser is moving a over 290,000 km / per sec. The aiming computer doesn't have to "lead" the target much by anything. It could simply point the gun directly at the tiny ship and the moment the trigger is pressed is same moment that the ship is hit. Lasers are the ultimate "bullets"... You shouldn't seem then "flying" towards the targets like tracers. They are instant.

I've always thought Star Wars was too ridiculous in the way it had to rewrite physics just to "let" the Rebels win.. Like Storm Troops firing laser rifles and the rebels ducking and dodging em.. :)

Actually, all the lasers we are seeing fired arn't even lasers at all, their bolts of plasma. Though they operate in kind of the same way, but to make plasma, you have to heat gas up to extreme heat that would eventually become a glowing particle beam that could melt through targets.

So unlike a laser witch is a constant stream that is so accurate all you have to do is point at a target and it hits, a plasma bolt or "blaster bolt" in this sense still has to follow Newton's Second Law of motion, force equals mass times acceleration.

So in conclusion, you would still have to lead your target if you wanted to hit something as small as a starfighter. Though considering in cannon they got star fighters that can go 807 MPH which is basically breaking the sound barrier, trying to hit something that small with a turbolaser is a impossible task.

In the Star Wars universe, there are both Laser based and Plasma based weaponry. Any weapon that is called a Laser IS A Laser based weapon i.e light speed. Eg. A "Turbo Laser" as mounted on Capital Star ships like a Star Destroyer is a bonafide laser weapon. Thus its shoots a beam of light.

A plasma weapon discharge would look nothing like a laser beam (or Hollywood style tracer) for that matter. A decent depiction of a plasma weapon would be as the one on the movie Predator (the shoulder mounted "Plasma Caster"). A "fat" mass of heavy super heated particles leaving a trail arc as it is "lobbed" towards its target. Plasma weapons would have relatively short ranges (because its damage is based on Heat, the further it has to travel, the cooler and thus more ineffective it would be), high lead time targeting, (almost like artillery), but do VERY HEAVY heat based damage.

Lasers in comparison, would have almost infinite range, almost no lead time targeting, but do substantially less damage). The Ultimate Lasers in Star-Wars (and any Universe for that matter) are called "Turbo-Lasers". They are incredibly powerful weapons that could vaporize a fully shielded ship in a single shot. Shooting a turbo laser at the ground for instant would have it penetrate all the way through down to solid rock (where it could be stopped due to great rock heat absorption). Like any weapon that is called a "laser", it travels at the speed of light, and thus cannot be dodged or evaded. (Unless the target can time travel).

The problem with Star Wars, is that the movies are done for "oohs and awes" effect. In a realistic space battle with laser weapons, you would not be able to see the lasers firing. So all the ships would be frantically maneuvering, but people would be confused because they couldn't see the "bullets" flying and thus sense the life threatening immediacy of the action. In other words, depicting the realistic capability of laser weaponry would be boring to a non-informed public.

Which bring us to now where people actually believe this is what laser warfare really looks like... Bullet Tracers... :(

You may also like to take note that Star Wars is a 'science-fiction' film, not a documentary on the future of warfare according to proper scientific behaviour.

Also, lasers do not have near infinite range, since a laser is light, an electromagnetic wave, it will experience free space path loss when travelling through the vacuum of space. If the laser was fired with a frequency of 2 GHz and with a gain of 50 dB, by the time it reached a target 10km away, it has already lost approximately 37% of its strength.

I know Physics and I've studied electromagnetic waves and FSPL so I know what I'm talking about.
