You're right. The shields should be totally removed.
PS: If they're gorgoroth trolls, I even would put to them big weapons & more armour, something similar to sauron, i mean, big hammers of war & dark armours.
I am pretty certain in the book it said that trolls have shields. They aren't mindless brutes like Jackson made them out to be in the movie, they are the evil version of Ents, Melkor made them in their image.
I think they meant more in their designs. The mean faces are too much.
