BattleAxe, a “true” Total War experience, challenges players to achieve victory over a large selection of campaigns and 30 factions. Diplomacy has been axed, all factions are “at war”. It’s a “mean” Medieval II streamlined for swift gameplay. Merchants, priests, and ships are omitted by default but may be simply added depending on your gameplay preference. Land bridges connect all continents and offer new strategic opportunities and threats so beware. Whether you have a weekend or a week you’ll find a fight in BattleAxe.

Things I like

- Sweden and Norway in a Grand Campaign (also like some of the other faction choices like Bulgaria). Nice.
- Different time era start dates. However their technology starts at the same early era when I tried late era.

Things I question

- Land map changes/Choices.
- Land bridges, no naval units so you can't send reinforcements quickly to places. Can't reach America
- America empty, waste of land mass, empty settlements on campaign map so pointless being there.
- Diplomacy - everyone is at war so potential for factions destroying each other quicker before you can even get to fight them, and potential for taking over most of map which is boring if your fighting one same faction battles over and over again. Diplomacy is a big part of the game, so this effectively removes that option which is a downside.
- Have to build up fast early game, no time to build up infrastructure or technology as you could in original game.
- Some Minor factions too strong, questionable choices. Especially if they sandwich a future power/empire and destroy them before they grow
