Baryonic Predicament is a singleplayer puzzle-action mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two. This mod contains over an hour worth of gameplay. Created by Miigga IMPORTANT: Turns out that some Steam update has caused this mod to not appear in the Steam games list. Worry not, simply go to the "gameinfo.txt" file that comes with the mod and add a } in the end. Restart Steam and it should show up now. Baryonic Predicament was originally exclusively released on Planetphillip.

Played with MMod.

Must say, I thoroughly enjoyed this mod for the most part. The environments are very well designed and look great, and the different puzzles made this a fun mind-bender at times.

My only qualm is that, while the combat sequences were fun to do, as they are in most HL2 mods, I found that they feel like they overstay their welcome at times, extending for much longer than I feel necessary. It also felt predictable after a while, where I would enter a big open area and instantly think "Oh, I'm about to fight a bunch of soldiers, and maybe another couple of Hunters as well.

Also, even though I enjoyed the puzzles for their creativity, after a while it does feel like an area included a puzzle for the sake of it, such as the watermelon and sawblades (though that one did get a chuckle out of me for such an absurd concept).

Despite this though, I had a great time throughout.

8/10

Well, I tried, I really did. I really liked this mod, but I'm at a point where I can go no further. There are a few missing things so I've had to noclip through to pass a couple of puzzles, but I'm in the big cavern where the buildings hang from the ceiling and I can't go any further. I've noclip into the room past the tram, and I can't climb the ladder onto the roof to realign the laser. Even if I noclip onto the roof where the laser controls are, I can't press the buttons, and I'm just stuck in space.

This is really broken. Sorry, I loved it, but it's really broken.

It started out great, and I was loving the puzzles, but I can go no further. Something is missing.

Countless missing textures and objects. Got through the first map anyway, but not worth the effort beyond that, sorry.

I'm getting a lot of ERROR objects and pink checkerboard also.
I'm thinking about switching the original gameinfo.txt with the one in the patch for Source SDK 2013...

I installed the patch over the full version and no more ERROR objects or pink checkerboard. Now if I can figure out how to
open that first garage-type door in the first building....

The only trouble I have, is trying to get the crossbow bolts to 'bounce'. How do you make them do it, they just end up either in the wall, or the floor.

Fun mod with beautiful design and well-tuned gameplay. Puzzles are mostly simple and few of them have more than 1-2 steps to them, but they still will probably take a few tries for you to complete. Those that are more complex made me appreciate the mod even more because I know how much scripting those required. Puzzles are followed by action arenas which are well made, neither too easy nor overwhelming, everything felt well balanced and playtested (no suprise, it was beta tested by a whole collective). Doesn't seem to follow any kind of story but instead just aims to creating fun challenge. Did I mention that level design is beautiful? Because it is quite well done, very well done if fact, and you wouldn't normally expect it from a puzzle mod; what I mean that it's not sterile and monotone like Portal, but quite the opposite. I was very pleased with observing quality level design. Good visuals, good balance, fun arenas and good pacing of action and puzzles - which is why I gave it 10/10. Go try it, it should be a fun ride.
