Finally someone get rid of this planet model. It may sound ridiculous, but I think that such details that make sense make the game much more enjoyable. Amazing work on that!

meh, seems like more work than it's worth to be honest. I mean it looks kind of cool at a first glance but wouldn't the result be that almost every system looks roughly the same (a central star being the emphasis with some planets orbiting)?

Jip, like now... every System has one Planet. :) But there is a technical aspect behind my Goal to bring some Variance. At The Moment one Planet from FoC have around 6500-7000 Polygons. Thats much, our ISD 2 have 20000. We have in our biggest current Galaxy 91 Planets, thats are 591k Polygons displayed... That needs a lot of resources.

My Planets will get around 1.5k-2.5k Polygons and if my other Idea Works the whole Galaxy needs around 30k-40k Polygons. A huge Improvment in my Eyes and worth the additional work. Also AotR gets a new Look after almost 10 Years.

Two negatives. The one CapnDan already mentioned and if you have all the planets from one system you eliminate some planets that will never be playable. An example of this would be Corellia's system where planets Selonia, Drall, Talus & Tralus could never be playable ground or space maps since you're not going to take Corellia out of a GC for one of them. Though these cases are actually relatively rare.

The polycount reduction seems huge. However, is the polycount even the performance killer for large GCs? Isn't it the fact the AI just likes to move around the planets with hundereds of single stacks of units? If the planet polycount reduction increases performance than this is quite a good upgrade.

Look forward to seeing updates on this.

Good Point, at the Moment we don´t have these Planets in the GC´s but in a future Update it could be necessary. Hm maybe not every System should get its own Sun... I have to rework that... *runs back into the Laboratory...*

Yes, in a GC with 90+ Planets its Part of the Performance Killer, for sure the AI and his useless Single stacks are the other Side of the Medal.

Could you not just have a few satellite systems placed closely around the main system in question for those planets deemed important enough to game play, then still have your new system design that you've shown us?

This would fix the issue of certain planets being excluded from the GC scenario.

Granted one would probably increase the planet count quite significantly, which I can imagine would probably cause some problems with regard to performance.

Good idea, hm depends on how many space we have between the "core" planets. But i sucessfully reduced the amount of polygons by 50% with the acutal Planet models, thats a good thing.

Okay, as u can all see, in our Screenshot Gallery, we are working on many Fronts.

After your positive Feedback to the new Galaxy Layout, I decided to show you a another little Step in the process...

In this Video the Point of Interest is Corellia, as u can see the brave Corellians got a Sun and two Planets surrounding it. I know Corellia have much more Planets in the System, but its a Protoype and a Design Study its also to big, they will be scaled down properly.

Too many Planets on the Galaxy Map flying around may be a bit distracting.

If you have any Suggestions, Critics and Ideas please leave a Comment.
