Description

This International Women's Day we'd like to highlight the lives of those often overlooked by history, especially in such a setting as the 19th century where historiography was still finding its footing. In societies that frequently shoved them away as second-class citizens - if they were treated like citizens at all - we have still found many examples of those who, against all odds, fought and led armies and even kingdoms in a world that frequently stacked the odds against them. One such leader was Queen Ranavalona I, a harsh ruler who fought tooth and nail against European encroachment into her Kingdom and fostered what may have been the first industrialized society in Africa.
