In order to start researching things and have your settlers build stuff, you have to activate these improvement options (this is due to probably a hardcoded thing. The panels will become very distorted if I don't have these buttons to "activate" them for some reason, oh well, minor issue).

Also! You might notice that the export/trade resource is now no longer export. It is now replaced by "Science". You can receive science by spawning scholars. They don't do anything other than trickle science, and will eventually gather enough for you to upgrade certain techs with.
