Scott we have third warp nacelle, we go warp 9. ,✨
I've always wondered and tried to explain to myself what difference an extra warp nacelle would make as in-universe seems to not support it adding any extra speed, also, the relation between the warpcore and the nacelles in my mind are kind of like the engine and wheels of a vehicle, no, so, I have finally concluded that it must contribute to warp bubble stability/integrity, kind of like how the extra wheels on a sixteen-wheeler allow it to carry extra weight and do long distances. more warp nacelles translate to High-end warp for longer?
Or am I missing something.
I don't know of any canon benefits of having more than two, or indeed more than one nacelle. My head canon reason is that it spreads engine strain out over more nacelles, therefore increasing the range a ship can travel at high warp, and increasing the time between maintenance overhauls.
Although, I just remembered, When the nx-01 list one nacelle to the Xindi attack, they were only able to reach warp 1.but that's the only instance I can think of and I'm sure, in retrospect, that it wasn't really well thought through. Unless it's like trying to ride a bicycle on one wheel because the other got busted.
I once read that having 3 nacelles was more about redundancy than anything else. While the nacelles do have a part to play in overall power generation, what it really broke down to was that they could alternate which 2 they had up at any point in time, in order to reduce wear and maintenance. In the case of the dreadnaughts, such as the Federation class, it was also so that if they lost one, they could still fly.
Don't know if this matters to you guys or not, but just read an article about the dreadnought. Apparently, although the ship outwardly just looks like a Constitution class with an extra nacelle, inside the skin it is very different. There were mentions of the framework and armor backing of the ship made as a honeycomb lattice for extra strength, and that with the reduction of science lab capacity they were add both a larger photon torpedo storage and considerably more phaser capacitors so that the rate of fire was almost doubled. Hope this helps with fleshing out the lore, and possibly the function of the ship.
