I just watched a youtube video this morning about her recollection of MLK telling her that she can't leave Star Trek, and the importance of her staying and what it meant. I did not know she had passed. Rest in peace Nichelle.

Description

When Nichelle Nichols was considering leaving her role on Star Trek, Martin Luther King Jr. told her that she had the power to change minds around the world.

The name 'Uhura' is derived from the Swahili word meaning 'freedom'. In her role, Nichelle Nichols was a trailblazer at a time when many people were struggling for just that. That struggle continues, but Nichelle Nichols' portrayal of a black woman with aptitude, authority and boundless compassion was a pivotal turning point towards representing people like her as people of value.

Beyond those issues, Nichelle Nichols was an integral part of a dream that has inspired millions of people around the world for generations. This inspiration has led countless people into science, medicine, engineering, technology, and many other fields of noble service. That inspiration will continue to lead others to do so.

Her legacy shall endure through our progress as a people.

Rest peacefully, Nichelle.
