Ages of the Federation is a new total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This mod takes place in the Enterprise and Original series eras, focusing on the conflict between the early Federation and Klingon Empire. A resurgent Romulan Star Empire, angry and still licking its wounds after their defeat to Earth and her allies waits in the shadows, ready to take advantage of any of misstep by either the warring powers. The Xindi, new to the galactic stage are also eager to forge their own path.
2241: USS Xenophon and her battlegroup ambush a Klingon strike force at Cygnus III. Morale plummetted across the fleet as time went on. Garth, along with many other captains, chafed under Starfleet's orders that there would be no large scale offensive action taken against the Klingons until more effective countermeasures could be deployed. Starfleet desperately needed a victory, but could not risk wasting ships and lives in another doomed counterattack. Nevertheless, even though he couldn't hope to match the Klingons in the open, Garth planned to strike a blow for the Federation. Leaving half his battlegroup exposed as bait and hiding the other half in the stormy atmosphere of the gas giant Cygnus III, Garth ambushed and destroyed a force of eight Klingon warships - severely weakening Klingon forces in the sector and winning the Federation's first significant victory of the Four Years War.

Also, my amount of excitement for tomorrow is entirely outside the norm of Starfleet protocol and I’m 99.9% positive I’m being brought up on report. 🤓

It would have been a cool effect in Sins if, in a neutral gravity well or under developed colony with few stations or ships, if you couldn't see the enemy ships behind a planet, and the same would go for them. More effective ambushes would be possible. The Supreme Commander series had a similar effect. One needed radar stations posted to accurately detect enemy troop movements, or long range units and defenses would not fire until enemy units were in close visual range.
I actually was just having a similar thought. How awesome it would be to hide a few ships in a gas giant's atmosphere.
