While AWAAP development is still paused, hope is at hands: "Bandits, coming in at eight o'clock high...break, break, break,........Gold Wing take those fighters, Natley and McArthur with me, we're going after the bombers....I'm going in on the leader.........got him! his starboard engine's burning up.....follow my lead men, tally ho!" ".......Damn it Gold Wing keep those fighters off us, I'm being torn to pieces......primary fuel lines been hit.....Jesus, keep them off me you bastards....those last two bombers aren't going to shoot themselves down....good God they've got the Bristol, her tanks have blown, she's going down!" A Wing And A Prayer is a total conversion for the Homeworld 2 engine, moving the action from space combat to early twentieth century aerial battles between a variety of fictional aircraft and airships, ranging from scout fighters up to ironclad super Zeppelins. Drawing on the style of games like "Crimson...

One feature of AWAAP is the ability to create aces from experience aircraft.
Having gained a certain number of kills, a wing can then be upgraded to be led by a famous fighter ace, which as well as boosting the effectiveness of the wing, also has a postive effect on friendly wings operating nearby.

For example, playing as the Germans you might have an esepically effective fighter wing, which has destroyed several enemy wings with few losses. This wing can then be upgraded to be led by a German ace, for example Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron). This wing will then be even more effective, and will boost the effectivness of nearby wings slightly (rather like the Vagyr command ship in Homeworld 2).

The upgraded wing will probably require some kind of visiual identification to set it apart from other wings, both for the player who owns them and for opponents. A bounty system might also be integrated (at least for the Air Pirates) whereby destroying a wing led by a famous ace leads to a sizeable resource bonus. There would also have to be a cap on how many ace wings could be controlled by a player at a time.

Some German and British Aces who mught be avaliable:
German Aces
Manfred von Richthofen
Werner Voss
Herman Goerring
Fritz Rumey
Lothar von Richthofen

British Aces
Edward "Mick" Mannock
James McCudden
Albert Ball
George McElroy
Arthur Rhys Davids

I'd like to also include some sort of custom dialog for the aces, except that would end up consisting of so much extra material.
Perhaps if they had one special phrase each they say when executing a certain order, for example completing an attack. I dont want them to endlessly repeat 'Hi I'm Baron Manfred Von Richoften' everytime you order them to attack, it would just become so annoying.

Sounds like a great idea.

Just one questions: (well it looks like 2)
Is it so that a squadron (or wing) get a chance to upgrade to one specific ace?
Example medium bombers 'always' upgrade to Manfred von Richthofen and Fighter to Werner Voss ?
Or is it so that if you have 2 wings of fighters:
One is could have the ace Manfred von Richthofen and the other wing of fighters Werner Voss?

Good question, forces me to think a bit about something I hadn't.

I think it would be fairly fixed in the case of real life aces, it would seem a little odd to have Richthofen flying a rocket plane...It would also give the mod more continuation if you knew ace x was going to be flying plane y.

On the other hand it would be more intresting if it were a little more random. Perhaps a mixture of the two? randomised fictional aces, with a few linear real world aces flying planes similar to the ones they actually flew?

Does that all make sense?
