S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Lost Alpha

Mod review

This mod gets a 4, and those 4 are only due to how amazing of a job they did bringing back all the old maps, cut content and how flawlessly they were all intergrated. It genuinely feels like your playing a whole new game, I love it to bits.

However! The gunplay is laughable at best, infuriating at worst. The balance is trying so hard to be survivalist it's ridiculous. The most realistic part about it is how you really feel like Sid is robbing you blind every time you go to trade.

Lets start with the gun play. I, the player, in a leather jacket die to about 2 bullets at best. Thats fantastic, I love it. Bandits, in similar leather jackets take about 5 shots from a Makarov to kill, and up to 3 shotgun shells roughly 6 meters with a sawn off shotgun. Ok, maybe its the shotgun. No, every shotgun, even the full length hunting shotguns, can not hit a man sized target at 5 meters. Meanwhile the Makarov can headshot targets at about 25 meters. AKS-74U's are only effective at about 30 meters, and I would love to comment on how effective my preferred vanilla STALKER weapon, the MP5, is but unfortunately I only found one and bafflingly you can not repair weapons at all once they get below a certain point. Utter insanity.

Lets cover that damage again. Mutants cant fairly reliably survive both barrels of a shotgun at point blank range. Stalkers can take up to two blasts with the barrel literally touching them and every pellet hitting them in the chest. While I die to a single round from an AKS-74U I personally witness a man in a trench coat take up to three bullets to the head from a Makarov, and reliably survive at least one shotgun blast to the chest at touching distance.

As for the economy! I even grabbed a mod that let me sell low condition weapons to traders for extra cash, I like to buy ammo, bandages and other luxuries you see. Even then I was never able to afford a measly TOZ-34. 30,000 Roubles. Each full inventory of guns, food and everything else I could find would land me about 2000-3000 per trip, and that covered me buying about 30 shotgun shells. Of which would allow me to kill... roughly 9 enemies. If they were mutants of course im losing money, if human... im still losing money really.

In short! This is perfect if you enjoy larger, fuller and more interesting STALKER maps and want to take a glimpse at what STALKER could have been back as it was in the trailers for the older builds.

This is also the perfect opportunity to suffer from extreme frustration as you fight the game for the right to play it, much less enjoy it in any capacity. I... begrudgingly suggest you try it if just to see the wonderful work they have done. But do NOT feel like you shouldn't cheat, mod or whatever it takes to make the damn game enjoyable to you.

Rating lowered due to the remnants of the teams "helpfulness". I suppose now I know first hand where the bad reputation comes from.

Mod review

This is as polished as you can get for the X-Ray engine.. very stable..very modular. You can set your install of Anomaly up to play how you want with the hundreds of mods for it - endless possibilities really.
