Nice trailer, looks good to see some of the "normal" Alchemilla.

This was a decent horror game experience. While this isn't one of the more creepier horror mods I've ever livestreamed, I certainly enjoyed the unsettling/interesting atmosphere and originality on display, both from the graphical feel of the game and the monster design.
I also liked how the change in difficulty genuinely felt different to the gameplay experience, despite some of it just being re-routed areas. And it was nice to be actually able to hear DragonNOR's good voice-acting for a change (you seemed quiet in CoF). Story was decent.
Overall, I liked what I saw and look forward to more in the future.

Suitepee - - 22 comments @ Inquietude - Gameplay Teaser

I'm seeing good and bad things from this teaser. The movement and the head bobbing added nicely to the feeling that the character was in a state of panic/fear, but the actual monster model chasing him didn't look scary in the slightest and looked kind of lacking generally. Voice-acting seemed ok. Hope the game contains scarier-looking monsters on release.

I'd only be interested in this if you don't have respawning dinosaurs in each room like the original had, which was it's biggest flaw having played through it one livestream long ago.

Well that's how I honestly felt. Seeing a scare copied from a much better put-together Source mod, and then making it worse by missing the sound cue of the player when they bump against each wall and having a less visually intimidating payoff "on the ceiling".

Now if this scare had been designed with the NH2 comparison in mind, but then had been twisted that so the scare happened earlier or something else happened, this could have been a clever scare concept. Instead, it's just a complete copy....minus the good parts.

You care to call that anything other than "insulting" or "pathetic"? Or at least, a lack of original creativity on the mod maker's part?

One of the finest horror games I've ever played. A clear example of what can be achieved with the Source engine and several years of hard creative graft.

It's called constructive criticism. Criticism is used to point out faults in the creator's work so they can improve their craft.

In this case, the creator needs to NOT be copying Nightmare House 2 scares AND instead come up with their own ideas. Especially when they do a half-assed job in copying them in the first place.

In a nutshell, I enjoyed their previous work AOM:DC far more than this and that game had far more technical issues.

CoF may be "great" in technical terms, but not much in gameplay terms. I've played better HL1 horror mods and I'd expect better from the makers of one of them.

Great ideas, bad execution....

I found this mod to be extremely disappointing. I like some of the new weapon sounds/Combine models and the addition of red blood to the zombies.

The rest was generic, the scares was pathetic and that one scare you copied from Nightmare House 2; insulting. You didn't include the sound cue of the player approaching the wall each time and the visual payoff was pathetic. If you're going to implement scare events like that, make your own in future. And also feel free to not use the NH2 "jump scare" pose scare either.

Overall I just felt this mod reeked of "I wanna be Nightmare House 2". Show some of your own creativity in future instalments.

I liked how they used real locations around Sweden for their in-game environments, they did indeed look nice.

The problem? Nothing creepy happened in any of them.
It's one thing to create realistic and creepy locations, but quite another to populate them with good scare events. They succeeded in only the former here in my opinion. I was most disappointed with the asylum near the end of the game for this particularly. Great atmosphere in the background, no real scares whatsoever occurred during my time in it.

Cry of Fear would be different in Source yes; it'd probably be more technically sound.
It may have been like Nightmare House 2 in that regard, providing a good mix of horror & action whilst being coded well and not having the same questionable HL zombie hit detection (that plagued AOM:DC also) for one thing.

I will not f**k off anytime soon. Accept criticism and provide a better argument next time please.

So it would seem, although it seems at least one person is willing to argue on a reasonable level.

4 years I believe.

In the same 4 years a lone programmer by the name of Hen Mazlowski created the mod Nightmare House 2 on the Source engine (and NH1/NH:Remake as stepping stones for NH2), which was a fine example of an action horror game that could both scare the player and entertain the player with satisfying gunplay.

Cry of Fear did neither of these.
Yes they pushed the limitations of the GoldSrc engine, but to what avail? Bad scares? Terrible hard-coded inventory system that forced awkward backtracking? The same awkward hit detection that AOM:DC possessed?

I don't have a single criticism for Nightmare House 2 conversely, because time and effort was spent creating its horror atmosphere and its technical coding.

Also just because they spent 4 years working on the game doesn't mean I'm not allowed to critique it. I saw them do better in AOM:DC, I was disappointed in what they did in Cry of Fear.

Deal with criticism my friend.

Realistic in having a small fuse occupy the same space as a shotgun? Or just a lazy hard-coded inventory system that's meant to create tension in deciding what weapons/equipment to take with you, but in fact just leads to tedious backtracking in reacquiring them afterwards.

I wouldn't have a grievance with CoF in this regard if they wanted us to choose between different weapon types and not being able to carry everything.
But this never happened.
Instead you'd come across a key or fuse and have to drop a weapon to carry it, then you'd simply return back to the same location after to pick up the dropped weapon and carry on your merry way. Hardly the most fun thing to do in any game.

I agree that the mod was atmospheric at times; I praised the environments in my original comment. Sadly however these environments lacked any good payoff. The asylum for example? No real scares whatsoever, but looked creepy. But nothing happened!

They pulled off atmospheric horror a lot better in AOM:DC. In CoF it was just great idea, bad execution time and time again in the horror department.

This is called criticism Keyalorian12385, get used to seeing it.

A key taking up the same space as a shotgun = realistic? No.

I still expect "realistic" horror games to be scary at times also. Whether a game aims for realism or not, if they can't pull off scares properly it sucks either way.

I liked the scare ideas in the house generally from the Prologue, and the gunplay for the rest of the game was pretty decent.

Need to ask though; is Underhell going to be divided between an action-oriented main campaign and a scare-packed House, or will we see scares in the action campaign and vice-versa? Or will they both merge into one at some point?

Either way, hope to be playing Chapter 1 soon. Looking forward to seeing more spookiness from the Nightmare House 2 creator's team.

(buried)

What a disappointment this mod was for me. 4 years of development and the best that emerged was that they can still create somewhat unsettling environments (like the asylum near the end) but now without the ability to deliver a good payoff within them. And I'd really like to know what they were thinking in hard-coding that stupid 6-slot/3-slot inventory system into the game as opposed to just sticking to the basic HL inventory system. Great scare potential, disappointing execution throughout (e.g. the hanging tree scare).

The only real positive was that whoever did the weapon modelling/animation, kudos. You did a great job in making the weapons feel authentic and weighty in their impact.

Honestly, they did a lot better with the less technically profound AOM:DC using more basic scare graphics but having 10 times the consistent atmosphere than displayed in Cry of Fear.

If the team ever get round to a third horror game mod, I hope they improve. And maybe consider finally using the Source engine.

I greatly enjoyed Afraid of Monsters; one of the very few horror games with a memorably haunting atmosphere. I sincerely hope after 4 years of development (much like Nightmare House 2) that Cry of Fear also possesses a memorably haunting atmosphere, if not moreso than AOM:DC. I look forward to livestreaming this game when it comes out!

Quick question: is there going to be any Aphex Twin music in CoF?
