"For several more years the Lanteans were able to hold off their attackers, relying on the city's shield and superior weaponry, including the weapons satellite system. No matter how many Wraith ships they destroyed, more kept coming. They could win almost every battle but they saw no way to win the war, so they submerged the city and left."
—John Sheppard.

So it did, many times, but more fleets kept showing up, one after the other. By this point they only had one planet left, the Wraith controlled the rest of the galaxy. Atlantis' power was utterly irrelevant. They used the city's entire drone supply to fight of wave after wave of ships, because they came faster than the Ancients could construct more drones using resources from just the one single planet they had left.

Oh that won't be a problem, I've already flown an overpowered Atlantis while I tweaked its shield/hull strength to get it balanced.

True, you wouldn't be sending it to the front lines if you didn't have to, because it indeed has a large number of people living there.

When it comes to Atlantis' shields being a tactical flaw, well, when you think about it, in the Stargate universe, most ships who end up without a shield are dead anyway in a combat situation. Because the weapons used by most races are powerful enough to turn a ships hull into Swiss cheese pretty quickly. It's only if by some miracle or reason they stop firing you'll survive because you can close of the damaged sections.

As for its limited firepower, that is relative. It doesn't take thousands of drones to destroy a single ship, in most cases anywhere from five to a few dozen can do the job depending on what ship you're up against. So even though there is a limit, within that limit it can still take out a fleet single handedly before needing to replenish, which in most wars would be incredibly devastating to your enemy.

You are correct on that, I'm not saying Atlantis needs to be the most powerful unit in the game. Because you are right, the Tau'ri aren't able to release the city's full potential.

However that doesn't mean I will agree with people saying Atlantis isn't a incredibly powerful ship because it happens to be a city. It's not the city aspect that causes it's weakness, it's our inability to operate it the way it's meant to be.

Atlantis is one of those lovely conumdrums. By all rights it should be powerful. It has three drone launch installations that, when fully stocked, would unleash torrents of drones that would destroy just about any fleet of ships that dares to attack it, with perhaps Ori, Ancient and Asgard ships as exceptions.

It has a shield that, when powered by just a single ZPM, can sustain continued weaponsfire of a fleet of twelve Hiveships (and their escorts) for days without breaking a sweat and the Asuran beam weapon, which is even more powerful, for 30 hours.

Quite frankly the only reason it performed so underwhelmingly against the Superhive is because the Superhive was insanely powerful and, let's face it, the story would have been over too quickly if it had turned up and blasted it out of the sky like it was nothing.

Well getting them 100% screen accurate might be an issue, but it should still be doable.

Terrible characters, really? Surely Rush, Young, Eli, Brody, Volker, Greer, Dr Perry and Ginn weren't that bad. The one real mistake they made was the slow build up in season 1, because clearly people weren't ready for it, which is a shame because it certainly did end up paying off in season 2. And let's face it, a lot of tv shows have a rough first season.

Oh you guys are just gluttons for punishment aren't you? From what I've read it's bit of a pain to get a model rigged and set up properly for it to work without any hassle.

Oh hey there, sorry didn't realize you posted here. And you're welcome, you folks have been doing an amazing job on the mod. The continued dedication you have all been showing is impressive to say the least. Like I mentioned I once worked with the mod for a brief period and in the end I couldn't keep up with it anymore so I understand how difficult it must be to keep going.

When it comes to determining how powerful a ship is in the stargate series (and many other series for that matter) it's pretty much impossible. Because often the strength of any weapon or ship is as weak or as powerful as it needs to be for the story of an episode to work.

To mikey1871 and others like him. I have had the privilege to work with these people for a short while so I know what I'm talking about. So take a moment and read this, carefully.

I started eager to help them out and build this fantastic mod along with them. Then my life got busy and I lost a large amount of my free time. As a result I ended up disappointing them because it was easier to focus on my studies and other personal issues than it was creating this mod. I left them hanging, which I still regret to this day.

As a result they again had to start searching for people who could and would devote their precious free time working on this mod for no real reason except their own enjoyment, slaving away at coding and modelling every unit and building. All the while the only thing people like yourself are contributing, is the constant whining and nagging about when the next update will be, when the next release will be, when the next screenshot will be posted, if they will add this or that.

It is nothing but a miracle these people are still working on this mod today. After all the setbacks and problems they have had, both with the mod and in their own personal lives, it is safe to say most people who have quit and let it die, as happens so often when people try to make a mod.

They didn't give up, they're still working on it and trying to make it into the best mod that they can with only a few people and very little time. They even try to include the community by creating contests and updating as often as they can.

So how about, instead of complaining and being ungrateful, you remember these people are NOT on a mission to satisfy your selfish need for personal enjoyment.

Nobody forced you to be here and wait those 4 years during which you could already enjoy a fantastic mod with the V1.1 versions and up.

Because unfortunately this is all done in people's free time. And as we all know we have never enough free time. Merlin, Klon and all the others are doing tremendous efforts to get this done and it's not easy. I've been in their situation and I couldn't keep up with it. You should be grateful they have continued to put in all the effort they have till this day.

Just so you all know, there might be some subtle changes to them here and there. Turns out the texture wasn't optimal, so when I rework it some small details may change. Though it will stay mostly the same.

Actually, the wraith would be the only ones left out. Because Anubis' mothership superweapon could destroy a gate and devastate a good portion of a planet.

They are making THEIR stargate mod, meaning it's not an official game, so they can do whatever they want with it. It amazes me. These people are doing all this work in their own spare time and all they get in return is. "Is the mod done yet?" "Why isn't this unit as strong as in the series" "Why isn't this race in the game." "Why can't we have/fly/build this ship."

Seriously people be happy you get this much. And if you're not happy about it well tough luck.

Well if you look closely in the trailer, the ship Eli is beamed up on is the George Hammond. So Carter will likely show up during one of those scenes, since we know she is taking command of that ship from the Atlantis finale.

Speaking of which. The sound designers on your team should probably look into that when they have the time. If you are going to make them stop in the middle of the song, it might be good to put in a fade out.

Hmm, well looking at this list, I might be able to do the environments, although my texturing skills aren't all that great. And I should be able to make sound effects, but I don't understand German well enough, nor do I have the German episodes.

It's not an issue. In the show they used different models. You have the Rainmaker model, which was first used in Rising and then on throughout the rest of the seasons. And then there is the Atmosphere model. I'm not exactly sure when it made it's first appearance in the series but it was also in Season 1.

Both models have been used in the VFX scenes, and usually in such a way that if you don't pay close attention the differences between the two models aren't that visible. Over time the Atmosphere model was also upgraded over time to make it more uniform with the Rainmaker model.

For example the Atmosphere model did not have a stardrive section in the very beginning, seeing the city was on the ocean so it did not need to be visible.

For comparison here is a screenshot. The top model is the Rainmaker one, and the bottem one the Atmosphere one.

Majhost.com

When I made the ingame model I based it on the Rainmaker one. The high poly on the other hand was made by someone who based it upon the Atmosphere one.

Actually it's not so much that the hulls are weak, rather that the weapons are incredibly strong.

Consider the hulls of Tauri ships are composed of Trinium among other things, which we know is a damn tough metal. And those are still quite weak compared of what some of the other races posess.

In the show they use more then one model during the VFX scenes. The one you have linked is the Rainmaker model, the one which I consider the official and right one, seeing it was the first to ever appear on screen.

This model however is based on the one used by Atmosphere FX. As you can see here.

Images1.wikia.nocookie.net

It's been used numerous times in the series often in combination with the Rainmaker model. For example Progeny, when the Asuran city takes off. A few seconds later when we get the view of the Stardrive it's the Rainmaker model again.

Yeah it's food for thought. In one respect it seems that without the shield everyone would suffocate.
-------
WEIR: Lower the shield.

McKAY: We’re about to go into space! If you plan on breathing, we’re gonna need the shield.
-----
And in others like this sequence in Adrift.
-----
CHUCK: The city’s outer buildings are decompressing -- shutting down the artificial gravity.

TEYLA: Why would the city do such a thing?

McKAY: It’s gonna collapse the shield. It’s trying to save power.
----

Which suggests that decompression and antigrav shut down happen before the shield collapses. So either side has at least an argument.

However it wouldn't make sense for the city to survive very long without a shield at any rate. Again as Mckay said in the Storm.

McKAY: The people who built this city knew they had a forcefield capable of holding back anything Mother Nature or, for that matter, the Wraith could throw at them. Without that protection, Atlantis is remarkably fragile.

And to think the official model made by Rainmaker, has over 4 million polys in it. The detail, the work. God I want their hardware.

Merlin you may have 4Gig of Ram in your computer but it's not using it all.

Vista 32Bit can only use up to 3GB of memory. You need 64 bit to get to use the full 4GB. It has to do with the amount of adress locations it can handle.
