Year of the Dragon

Early access mod review

The new demo is a byte-sized classic Spyro fun, if you liked those games or are mildly interested in the concept of mashing that together with HL, please give it a try. Not only is playing as the dragon as good as ever, all the levels are remade to fit his playstyle, and there's a bit more for those that like exploration.

SIGNAL LOST

Early access mod review

For anyone wondering if they should play this mod, they absolutely should.

It's a recreation of Uplink with alpha and other cut concepts fitting in nicely, so you'll see some of the notes done by that demo, but with so many twists that it feels really fresh. The new enemies are nice to see and fight, and the general aesthetic brings back that late 90s feel, not just from visuals but also sounds, and speaking of sounds, Jane really knows how to make the HL (plus 2 and episodes) and Portal tracks we know and love fit well in the BM setting. As for the combat itself, while weapon switching was made slower (for anyone who's played Azure Sheep or Point of View will know about this), the damage output has been increased a lot to compensate for this, especially for weapons like the shotgun and the crowbar. And there's one particular encounter that takes the highlight for me in this mod. The tease at the end left me wanting more, and I'll patiently wait until the rest of chapter 2 comes out.

Overall, don't be discouraged when you see the Early Access tag, what's out now is entertaining enough to be worth a playthrough, and there's replayability if you wanna go secret hunting (found quite a number of those in my blind playthrough). As for difficulty, I played this on hard (medium if we count the available ones as "easy", "medium" and "hard").

Dark Interval

Early access mod review

I played all 3 part 1 releases by now, and with each one you can see how the devs improved their skills and from what I saw of part 2 so far, I'm sure they won't dissapoint. But going back to part 1, the atmosphere is top notch, and it does a lot for building their own version of the beta "universe". Also kudos for making minigames for the arcade, they're pretty fun on replays.

Raising the Bar: Redux

Early access mod review

I rated this mod 10/10 even if its only 1 division released because I really liked how it looks and feels to play, mostly the huge upgrade the mp7 got and how the new enemies and the old ones behave now. It has tons of little stuff to find if you explore well enough and the music helps set the atmosphere, all I can say to everyone who hasn't played this is to give it a try since it has tons of potential. The redesigns are hit and miss for some people, but to me I feel they do a pretty good job to make the mod stand out even more and give it its own identity.
