You have 2 trinket slots per adventurer
these bits affect stats in various ways

the glowing books reduce stress taken by 20%
those combined with stress reducing +quirks can lower most stress down to 1 or 2 points per event, making removing it trivial

the red crystal boosts health by 20% and the spiked collar has a 10% health boost and reduces food consumed by 100%

for higher level adventrures boosting monster surprise and lowering adventurer by 20% is useful
also boosting trap detection and scouting by 20% is a good trinket

eventually you find the ancestor trinkets which have some bigger and better boosts - but they all add some % of stress
its expensive, but using the sanitarium to lock in stress lowering +quirks is a priority
also worthy of lock in are hit point boost, damage boost, and protection
