Raising the Bar: Redux

Early access mod review

I'd give it 9.5 if it was possible, but it's not. The mod so far is very, VERY high quality, although not completely perfect. If it maintains this level and ever gets finished, RtB will truly be one of the best things to be hosted on ModDB.

Mental Omega

Mod review

The sheer amount of effort that was poured into making this mod deserves praise, but I find actually playing it less enjoyable than vanilla YR. The AI having infinite money and almost halved building times doesn't make it hard, as it is just as moronic and susceptible to infinitely headbutt into a wall of defensive buildings as ever. Attacking in the face of never-ending unit spam and almost instantly rebuilt structures is very tedious, however, making skirmish games a drag that allow no strategy other than trying to circumvent the AI's spam entirely eg.: by using naval bombardment. The mod's myriad of absolutely insufferable and cancerous "support powers" that deal direct and mostly unavoidable damage, or are just plainly annoying to the extreme, overpowered spies, and what I think is apparently quite consistent favoritism for certain factions further diminish its value, and there is no apparent sign that Speeder even considers these to be problems, much less ones that need fixing.

Despite these, Mental Omega remains one, if not THE best Red Alert 2 mods out there, and the sheer amount of high-quality content definitely makes it worth a try.

Hungarian Flavor

Mod review

The amount of work put into this mod is amazing, and so is the end result. It is not perfect, but it's damn near close.

Forgotten Hope

Mod review

I'll be honest, after reading on multiple different sites that this is "the best mod for bf1942", I have to say that Forgotten Hope was a huge disappointment. The sheer amount of content can not be denied - the mod has about three to four times as much as the base game, and some of it, like tank and airplane models, are quite good. On the other hand, the mod adds lots of extra tedium in the name of "reality", for example, aircrafts carry very few bombs now and the ammo resupply radius at runways has been nerfed, and as a result, bombers spend 90% of their time flying back and forth to and from the base. Realistic, but not fun. The most notorious example has to be the way tank guns were butchered: crosshairs were removed from normal tank view, and a "realistic" tank sight was added, which while vaguely looks like a tank sight, has nothing realistic about it, it is inaccurate both vertically and horizontally, there seems to be no way to find the range with it, and it cannot zoom. Add to this that tank shells have no tracers whatsoever now and that you might hit an enemy tank but not penetrate its armor, in which case there will be no hit marker, and the result is a dysfunctional aiming system that also makes trajectory correction based on observing where the shells go nigh impossible. The extreme bloom on most handguns while moving, and the ridiculously long time it takes said bloom to disappear once the player stops should be mentioned, it punishes anything but staying still and camping.

Maps vary greatly in their quality, some are really good, others are somewhat low-quality. On quite a few of them that is supposed to have bot support, the AI is waypointed in such a half-assed way, that bot support might as well not exist. Examples for this are Coral Sea, where the japs will do fck all nothing, or Supercharge, when half of the German bots tend to get stuck at a specific point at the edge of the map. For some reason, the post-battle fluff text for custom maps is also copy-pasted from official maps, which is obviously quite dumb.

All in all, the mod adds some great stuff, but the quality of its content is inconsistent, and varies from great to outright gamebreakingly bad, and it could use a lot of polishing.

And one more thing, BF1942 does not like Windows 7 64 Bit, and even though the mod download says [Win7], it's not any more stable than the base game. The portable version crashes 100% of the time.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Unofficial Patch

Mod review

A must have, very high quality, though there is always room for improvement, it deserves all the praise we can give, shame that 10 is the highest score on the scale.
