Black Mesa: Uplink

Mod review

I never played the original Uplink, so instead of making comparisons I'm just going to base this on overall quality of the mod as its own thing.

Ultimately, the gameplay is mostly pretty good. It would've been nice to have had just a little more health spread throughout. It suffers from Black Mesa's annoyingly accurate HECU Marines, but that's not at the fault of the author of this particular mod.

Perhaps some more detail in the environment would have made the game look more visually appealing. But for what it is, Uplink is not an ugly game and has a decent amount of fun for a twenty minute map-pack. I would have liked to see some more creative freedom on the author's part. It is running on Half Life 2's Source code, why not use some of its mechanics? Sure if you want it to be a purists rendition of the original, you don't want to be adding new mechanics and what not. But it certainly would've been more interesting and more fun if a little more was added. Maybe extending the map, giving the player more to do or a wider variety of enemies.

My biggest gripe with the mod, funny enough, is the valve puzzle in the satellite room. The valve itself uses the grey detail prop model instead of the red one, to signify that it is a usable prop. As for the rest of the game, some puzzles were nice, but it wasn't always clear where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do. Maybe make the buttons look like more obvious buttons, use some product placement to help steer the player's attention.

Cry of Fear

Game review

The scariest game I've played since F.E.A.R. truly a modern classic.
