The Briefcase

Game review

It worked, wasn't buggy, didn't look bad. But it was about 6 minutes long with no story or...anything interesting, really. I played it twice just so I could see what the "bad end" was and even it wasn't exciting. There wasn't anything wrong with the technical aspects though so with a couple of tweaks and additions it could easily be improved upon!

edit: I take that back, the only thing I would change technically would be binding the "use" key to E, not enter.

Underhell

Mod review may contain spoilers

I have the worst love/hate relationship with this game. I do love it, it's fun and entertaining, but my god I have absolutely no idea what's going on. First I'm in a scary house and my wife is dead and then I'm a S.W.A.T. team dude and then bam terrorists all over the place. I spent most of the action sequence saying "what the hell is going on???"

I loved the house section but the action sequence just dragged on forever to me. I played it a few months ago and I don't know if this has changed yet or not but once I went to one sequence I couldn't go to the other and have it save my progress--something I learned the hard way after going back to the house near the very end of the action sequence. It was also pretty buggy but seeing how many great review scores it has I've got to assume that was something happening on my end.

ALL OF THAT ASIDE, this mod is definitely one of the most enjoyable HL2 horror-ish mods I've seen and I got a whole lot of play time out of it which is great. It's awesome to play free mods that are more enjoyable than a lot of 60$ retail games out there. I can't wait to see the new chapters and hopefully figure out what the story is all about.

Korsakovia

cool concept, terrible execution, felt like it was trying way too hard to be art with nothing really backing it up

Dear Esther

Mod review

Pros: The story is good, as are the graphics. The voice acting is AMAZING.

Cons: Game music audio is too loud to hear a lot of the dialogue, which is awful because the voice acting really is fantastic. Turning down the music turns down the dialogue as well. I believe the point of the mod is exploration and discovering the story yourself, but: I got stuck on invisible walls and had to restart multiple times. That combined with the very slow walking pace made the discovery more of an arduous task than an artistic "experience".

Project Zomboid

Early access game review

Really great realism mechanics. I personally really like the isometric view and old school graphics. I'm looking forward to the new updates, but even as it is now I'd say it's well worth the money. Yes, even without the save feature: the point is that you're going to die, it's the end of the world, you're supposed to see how long you can last. Being able to save every time before you made a difficult decision would kind of take away from the urgency. Hands down my favorite zombie game. I mean seriously... what other game could successfully incorporate beta-blockers?

Nightmare House 2

Mod review

This is probably one of the scariest games I've ever played, definitely the scariest mod I've ever played. Good story and awesome use of psych horror.

Long enough to keep me playing it on and off for a few days, short enough that I don't get bored of it. Graphics are what you would expect from a hl2 mod. Controls work, didn't run into any glitches or bugs. Solid game all around that I've recommended to quite a few people
