Leave a comment. I like to hear what folks think - your opinion matters more than you think.

The walking animation evokes a slightly pointed upward feminine hand pose. This is a personal observation and opinion.

As for gender, there are a lot more genders than just male and female. For those people, they can't simply choose a gender that matches theirs if the only options are male and female.

Not a big fan of how the girls hands seem to be pushed out in a traditionally feminine pose. With such pixelated characters, why even bother differentiating? Why not just have them be generic and gender-less - let people impose their own gender on the default character?

I really love the textures you use for these ships, and the models themselves. There is something different and appealing about them.

This looks fantastic. I love the direction your going with combat - fewer, but more complex and interesting enemies.

This visualization puts me in the awkward position of wanting to code differently in order to make the visual look prettier...

GorillaOne - - 61 comments @ What price is the sweet spot for indies?

Depends - $5 is a great impulse purchase. If the game even looks remotely interesting, I'll typically buy it at that price. $9.99->19.99 are also great prices for high quality indies. I'll buy at those prices if they have a good review or compelling gameplay videos.

Thanks! I had it filmed by a friend of mine who has done some documentary work before (http://ciclovida.org/). He had some snappy ideas that really made the video interesting. I'll be posting the outtakes in a week or two.

GorillaOne - - 61 comments @ Support Display

It's a bit scary too! There is a significant amount of code to be either redone, or moved over to the new system and massaged into working correctly. As anyone who has done any large programming system knows, you will learn so much over the course of the project, the urge to go back and redo it all just because you can "do it better" is ENORMOUS. So at times like this, it can be really difficult to figure out of there is a legitimate need to rework something, or is it just the "Programmers Urge" (I've just coined a phrase. Ohhh yeah).

As for the support system display, it still needs some work, but it's the direct result of feedback I got from folks that they didn't understand how support worked - whey they could sometimes build a block, and sometimes not.

Thanks Pepe. The AI has some kinks to workout. A lot of the time they are doing something smart (they are waiting for someone to come along and build a ladder), but they LOOK stupid just waiting, so that's the impression they give.

I don't see any links to your Kickstarter campaign from either this post, or from your webpage. That seems like... something you might want to fix ASAP?

I'll be releasing a public alpha toward the end of next week. Track the game and you'll be able to download it as soon as I upload it. :)

Thanks - you'll have the chance in a week. I'm going to release the build I'm submitting to an indie competition as alpha.

Alternatively, you can check out Bundle-in-a-box.com, get their latest bundle, and play the current alpha. In the name of full disclosure, you can access the alpha file on their blog without buying the bundle and voting for King Randall's Party. But then you would be a party pooper... wouldn't you?

GorillaOne - - 61 comments @ Weekend Feature Dump #1 [Alpha Download]

I can understand your prospective - free stuff is good, AMIRITE!? Unfortunately, people have a limited number of entertainment hours, and it's a developers job to prove to the consumer that their product is worth spending that time on. The attitude that "Customers should be super grateful that I'm even giving them a chance to play my awesome game" is not terrifically useful, nor does it reflect the realities of sales.

I also agree with Hemebond; stating that you need to sign up for your forums in order to get access to the beta, when the beta is clearly accessible from a single, publicly available external website, seems disingenuous. The developer can host his files wherever he wants, and if he doesn't want to host them on indie-db because it's a pain in the *** to update multiple places (which I totally understand) that's his prerogative.

The community members pointing out how this creates a barrier to entry were making a good point though - being able to gracefully and politely accept feedback like this (and then do whatever you want with it) is an essential skill for a businessperson. Being unable to accept feedback, even if it is couched in aggressive terms, will just get in the way.
