My thoughts on Nintendo taking down AM2R aka Metroid 2 Remake

TheDooMinator Blog

For those who don't know, AM2R or 'Another Metroid 2 Remake' is a 1991 GameBoy Metroid 2: Return of Samus remake on PC, that was released on August 6 2016.

Two days, only TWO days later, it was removed from every file sharing site that had the thing uploaded by Nintendo, who filed a DMCA claim against it.

The reason was Nintendo trying to protect their IP. That's pretty much it. However, I absolutely detest their actions against a profit-free fan-made project that has its own forum with passionate fans, who wanted the game to be released.
Let me explain:

1. Analyzing Nintendo's statement:

“Nintendo’s broad library of characters, products, and brands are enjoyed by people around the world, and we appreciate the passion of our fans,” reads a statement provided to IGN by a Nintendo representative. “But just as Nintendo respects the intellectual property rights of others, we must also protect our own characters, trademarks and other content. The unapproved use of Nintendo’s intellectual property can weaken our ability to protect and preserve it, or to possibly use it for new projects.”

" and we appreciate the passion of our fans" - A lie. If Nintendo did appreciate the passion, they would jump to help the project to thrive & rise. This goes to every fan project they have had shut down in the past:

'Nintendo has shut down several fan-related projects due to copyright infringement including a browser-friendly 3D homage to the Legend of Zelda, an NES visual compendium, and a Metroid Fan film subtitled Enemies Within. '

"The unapproved use of Nintendo’s intellectual property can weaken our ability to protect and preserve it, or to possibly use it for new projects.” - They absolutely have a right to shut down or remove projects & whatnot but just because you have a right to do so, doesn't mean you should ABUSE it & ban every fan-made game, just like you did.

I have the right to drive a car since I got the driving license. That doesn't mean I should drive 24/7.
(probably a bad comparison but whatever)

Second of all, "possibly use it for new projects". - What? A coop multiplayer no one wants? This part made me laugh because we all know 2D Metroid is dead since Zero Mission.

" The unapproved use of Nintendo’s intellectual property can weaken our ability to protect and preserve it" - This is my translation: "We won't approve fan projects because those project will actually be played by our fans rather than our games that we milk & try to adept to the modern gaming but fail miserably."

2. Looking at Valve, ID Software & Capcom's cases

Black Mesa Source, Brutal Doom & Mega Man vs Street Fighter

All of them supported by developers, either by actions or just words, all of them are for free (though Black Mesa Source is now on Steam for 20 € but was for free back in 2012, about 80 % finished mind you), all of them pose no threat to their IP owners & all of them grow bigger audience (which could mean more customers for the official games, like new or old Valve games, new DooM game, etc etc) & breed positivity to their creators & IP owners.

3. It's completely pointless. Nothing is changed. The file is still being shared among fans & the project is still supported, though privately.

So, looking at the current situation, Nintendo did nothing good for themselves but brought negativity among themselves & proved with their games lately, especially Metroid Federation Force that they just either don't care or don't know where to start over or change.

I mean, just look at this: Change.org

By the way, there is another petition opposing the above but has less support. LOL

Bottom line is, AM2R creator wanted nothing but to make Metroid fans happy, in which he did & succeeded & he's still succeeding while Nintendo failed & worsen their status as of lately.

Thank you for taking time to read this. Check the game out. It's amazing!

An awesome quote by a commenter on:

"Nintendo and their intellectual property is like a kid and his teddy bear. They should grow up and accept the fan made stuff and move on."

Have fun & destroy Nintendo's mind with it. Haha.

"Triple A" Gaming Industry vs Indie Gaming Industry

TheDooMinator Blog

"In the video game industry, AAA (pronounced "triple A") or Triple-A is a classification term used for games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion or the highest ratings by a consensus of professional reviewers. A title considered to be AAA is therefore expected to be a "high quality" game or to be among the year's bestsellers."

- AAA (video game industry), Wikipedia

Notice the apostrophes on the two words "high quality" game? Well, I put them there myself. I find it absolutely fascinating the fact that people think great quality when they hear a term 'Triple A title' when it's been proven for quite some time now that it's the complete opposite. It does feel like I'm one of the minority who has noticed this, so I really want this to spread if it's a possibility.

Last triple A title I played was Far Cry 3 & from the gaming news, I've heard a lot of either lazy or sloppy game developments from Ubisoft. Glitches out the butt, nonsensical game designs, modern FPS disease & list goes on & on. Last time I finished Far Cry 3 was last week on Tuesday 8 March 2016 & I've found many more bugs & faulty game designs, it literally made me sick to the point where I just wanted to finish it & bury it into a grave & name it: 'RIP Far Cry 3; 1. 1. 2015 - 8. 3. 2016 (the day I bought it & the day I ceased playing it)

Now, The Division, again, the wrongfully hyped title, takes the spotlight, and as of writing this rant, it is still a hot thing, has the EXACT same issues as the previous Ubisoft titles, (one of them even being the same exact 'glitch man' as from Assassin's Creed Unity) & people still buy into their products? Never for the love of my life will I ever figure out the consumer's mindset that has experienced the same thing in the past but falls for the exact trap. Really, the only thing I can come up with, is the term "battered wife". Look it up & you'll understand my thoughts.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, made by "Lord" Kojima, is a game I haven't played but heard issues left & right from the biggest fans to newcomers about bugged AI, simple difficulty, cut content or unfinished production & developers have the guts to charge it 60 dollars plus additional for the DLC? Digital?!

The last example of bullshit I'll give you is the new Hitman episodic pack or whatever. So, first we got DLC, now, we'll have a game chopped in pieces for some cash-grab techniques. I hope to God this won't continue as I do have some preferences in very few Triple A titles & if it does infect it, then my interest will fade away like a ghost in a darkness. But hey, people won't speak against it. I mean I swear, I looked at the Steam reviews of this game & literally 90 % of the reviews are about performance issues which is nice that you tell devs the issues but what about cut content? Not many mentioned about it.

So, lately, I've been playing some indie titles & what do I exactly get? Well, none of the BS I mentioned above, except for maybe some small bugs & DLC but DLC that is worth a damn. This is why I decided to turn into a different direction & continue my journey to enjoy my games & support the indie developers that won't screw us over because Triple A developers & their laziness & sloppiness is covered by the hype of the morons out there which in indie's case, it probably happened but not that often.

As I said, consumers are also to blame about the failing Triple A gaming industry. You don't speak with the words unless the game hasn't been released yet. Speak with the WALLET. Before the release (stupid pre-orders) & after the release. Do research & see for yourself if the game is a big pile of mess.

Oh, I forgot to mention Fallout 4. Well, the title & Bethesda's history speak for themselves. I won't type another separate essay about it.

So yea, Triple A meaning is completely pointless to me. While the Wiki description is accurate to some degree, it's also the lie proven by the state of gaming nowadays.

These so called "professional reviewers" are a joke. Nothing about them is professional except pushing their political agenda & subjective sentences about games that, unfortunately, people fall for it thinking that the essay is a factual document about video game's quality or something. (Trust me. I wanna slap my teenage self for that mistake.) And this happens mostly in the AAA gaming scene. Why? Well, higher promotional levels. That's why.

Bestseller? Yea! Let's buy broken, half finished products we're gonna pay for more later on, riiight? And wait till they fix it or try to fix it. Street Fighter V. A perfect example.

I hope Deus Ex Mankind Divided won't fall for this. Same with DooM 4 but if they do, I guarantee Square & Bethesda won't get a dime out of me.

Time to play some actual HIGH quality indie games & wait for more to be released.

Freedom Planet 2 & Shadow Warrior 2. High hopes for them. Why? Because the devs actually put love & care to them. They have proven themselves in the past & they thrive to improve it from there.

Just to point out something. Indie scene ain't perfect either. But trust me. You'll get more value out of spending money in that scene that Triple A.

Launch aka day one purchases

TheDooMinator Blog

I believe day one purchases should be ignored completely & here's why.

Game gets released & it's buggy mess, has these special editions scattered around (limited, *insert a specific name for a special edition*), needs tweaking & the online is horrendous.
People buy it, get ripped off & whine about it.
They still don't realize that we are in the age of these terrible business practices that devs have & then complain with words, instead of their wallets.

Why is it that you need to own the game day one? Nobody is forcing you to open a wallet if it's against your will. There is one thing called 'research'.

Few tips:

Read user based reviews, watch first impressions, view video reviews, read articles, watch trailers, see some small portions of gameplay & that's how you'll be able to find out if the game is worth the full price, which is usually 60 $.
It's that easy. There is no way you should get games day one. It's another form of entertainment. It's not life essential to own it immediately.

Now, here's what you should consider. If you wait for few years:

- the price drops
- game gets patched
- multiplayer gets fixed
- if the game is on PC, high number of mods will be available
- those mods will get patched

And the thing that Deus Ex Human Revolution has taught me:

- it may be released in a bundle with other titles in the same franchise or the definitive version could hit the market, just like what happened to Deus Ex Human Revolution Director's cut.

It pays to wait.

Hints or story text during the load times

TheDooMinator Blog

You play the game & the load time appears with hints or tips or a little background story.
I dunno about you but I love reading those. They help me get through the game easier or they help me understand the story a bit better.

However, the developers don't really have logic in their mind for this design.
Let's take the example that is Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Story text appears & I'm reading it. Because my PC is decent enough, load times are short thus missing out the rest of the text. Is it so hard to implement a prompt that tells you to press any key to continue, so that I can read it in peace?

Funny thing about this is that games with no text during the load screens, have this prompt.
It's the other way around for some odd reason.

Here are the solutions:
A) Give me hints during the gameplay or in the menu, otherwise implement that prompt to continue after the game is loaded.
B) Try to approach in a different way with the background stories, otherwise implement that prompt to continue after the game is loaded.

It's that easy.

Infinite scrolling

TheDooMinator Blog

I really need to get off my chest about infinite scrolling that is seemingly infesting the internet.
I despise it, badly and here's why.

When I went through my "liked playlist" on YouTube for nostalgia purpose to see what videos have I watched and liked in the past, I accidentally left-clicked on one of my videos and after clicking "show more" a couple of times, it pretty much killed it for me in the end because after what happened, I had to click "show more" multiple times again just to get to where I stayed. Oh and in the mean time, it can happen again, let's say.

Frustration kicks in, really hard. It's tedious as hell.
Question is, why? Why this feature? Is this a new software technological "advancement"? Because let me tell you, it isn't an advancement. People are suppose to make things less tedious and frustrating, not fuel it.

How hard is it to bring back a normal page to page feature with numbers to choose? It isn't. Really, it makes going through pages of certain site so much easier. If you accidentally refresh a page, you stay on the page you refreshed.
Same thing if your computer shuts down for some reason, at least you remember on what page you've been and just skip to there, instead of clicking "show more" a couple of times just to go through that stuff again.

It's a shame and the only site that still has an option to revert back to old-school searching in my recent memory, is DeviantART. Though, it doesn't have pages labeled with numbers, at least it isn't on one page, slowing down the computer with masses of art or whatever on the screen.

Not only that but infinite scrolling can bug out and can load forever till you refresh the page, especially if you clicked on "show more" multiple times, that can be quite tedious because, guess what? You are back to square one.

So, I just wish they could bring back normal search functions. Not asking much here.

That's all.
