I have to say that this mod has been quite a success, for that it has a full campaign featuring all three original factions, with a bunch of new units and buildings. With these reasons, it could have reached a top score IMHO.
However it does not.
I browsed all the ratings and reviews. Then I'm sure that my following opinions are not alone. There are also reports that when a criticism with a lot of reasons comes up, there will be a swarm of counterattacks like "if you complain it then you make your own". I really hope this attitude towards criticism is from fanatics that is blind to existing problems, not from the team.
I will list a few problems existing in this mod, and hope the comment will not be seriously boycotted or deleted by anyone:
(1) Too difficult to play for averages. This is not a mod claiming itself an "unofficial expansion" should be. The AI can be extremely relentless on high difficulty, but not on all difficulties. I noticed that too many people have complained about it. I have also heard that the team has slightly adjusted the difficulty of AI on Easy and Medium, but I don't believe it until the team releases a new version.
(2) Compatibility issues. Given that Ares is imperfect and the game is as old as my nephew, I will not expect a perfect run on my new computer. However, it CTDs so many times and sometimes may drive me crazy.
(3) Lack of updates. I do not see any updates from version 3.0 b1, which was released 3 years ago. Facing so many issues and bugs in this beta version, the team should not work on the fourth faction recently. Also, the team has released walkthrough videos on YouTube, but it uses an internal version, not for the public. Also, the encryption prohibits any improvement from the community. All of the above makes me delete this game from my deposit.
