Every year, ModDB strives to recognize the best games and mods that make use of our services through the Mod of the Year Awards. While MOTY 2008 was the most successful event thus far, it still presented the same problem as previous years. Voting for the Player's Choice Awards largely consisted of mods and games that did most of their chest-thumping in the few months leading up to them. How could the short attention spans of voters be harnessed to have them consider the full breadth of releases in a year?
Our solution - the "Summer of Mods and Indies"! This event will focus on rounding up all the major releases since the MOTY's in order to boost exposure for all those great mods and indie games you missed. It comes at a great time of the year too, when most gamers suffer from a drought of high-street commercial releases. All of this is made possible with help from our returning sponsor, the U.S. Air Force:
So sit back, relax and discover new gaming experiences that you never knew existed. The "Summer of Mods and Indies" event kicks off July 15!
The Summer of Mods & Indies event provides much needed exposure to mods and indie games in order to help them connect with their potential audiences. If you'd like to participate in this year's event, please contact stenchy by July 15th. Your mod must have been released or received a major update within the last 6 months in order to qualify.
we have tons of content coming your way.. post mortems, dev diaries, screens, videos and stories never before told or seen from the top teams, all exclusive to ModDB!
Prepare to get bombarded with the best... which we expect you to play!
Sounds amazing. I'm really looking forward to this!
The best means only popular stuff, right?
Nah, don't think so. They say "release in the last 6 month" or with a major update. Lemming-gathering projects don't fall into this category as they are usually unreleased and relaying on hype. Here the talk is about what actually got a release so the popularity status doesn't play in much at all.
The best = people willing to work with us to increase their exposure. Devs have to put in effort to make this work.
I think to many popular other projects make this pointless for projects like mine, so I'm not even trying it. My projects is just to unpopular and the game is death anyway. I really hate to realize that...
Keep up that "Oh, mine will never be as good" attitude and it won't. It won't be popular if you always think that others will overshadow it. You have to try to get exposure. You don't think that mods like Mechwarriors Living Legends just automatically were popular do you?
Mechwarior is for crysis, a popular game,
the game I have been working on is not popular at all.
I can garantee you that it is not my attitude, I have been working on a death game for longer than five years now and the effort I put into it was exorbitant, I have promoted the game and all big projects. The community is dead, plus it does not have the strength to stand up again and that I can't change.
To move one and life up my self again is the best I can do.
Which game?
It's Star Trek: Elite Force II, which has had a community plagued with problems.
Chriss: Even so, I think you should enter the co-op mod. It's bound to get at least some publicity because of the event, and that's better than nothing. At least, then, your achievements will not go unnoticed.
I like.
As the heavy of tf2 would say now !!!INCOMMING!!!
Hurm.
So if a mod wins an award here, is it still eligible to win a MOTY award?
Anyway, hope this increase exposture doesn't take the gloss of either event.
Totally separate, where the mods is more of an "awards show" with prizes and community voting, this is a showcase of the best from the first 6 months of the year. Mainly because so many damn good gameplay experiences have been released, and we want to give you a taste of all of them. That and look behind the scenes with exclusive and great content.
The only "prize" to be had here, is heaps of coverage for the teams on the homepage, in this profile and on the wider internet... so yeah please blog and mention when it launches: Moddb.com
I think its amaizing idea! Cuz realy, mods what go in early of year not so population in MOTY. And SOM&I its realy nice chance for early year mods be more famous. You guys ROKZ!!!
drumroll for the next 13days, 7hours 41minutes and 15 seconds
well, ain't this just freakin' cool.
very nice idea moddb.
(buried)
Amazing. You know, back in the day, the Air Force used its money for things like defending the U.S., rather then advertising to gamers who will most likely never join the USAF.
who cares?
Well, it gives them good reputation in a big group, the gamers. And gamers usually talk about big things to other people. (Who usually gets bored out of their mind.)
Should had gotten over that a while ago.
Nice, this is a great idea. It's always bugged me that the MOTY tends to focus on mods that have been in the limelight in the last few months of the year, and all the great releases from the first half are largely forgotten.
That's an interesting thing to pull off. Let's see what you cherry picked for us.
C´mon!
It´s only Summer on the Northern Hemisphere!
Here is cold!
by the way, I´m waiting it...
Great idea, looking forward to it! It will be really interesting to see what makes the grade.
sidenotes:
I find it really funny that the U.S. Airforce is advertising on ModDB because it seems like none of the guys who work for ModDB are actually from the U.S.!
I also like how the little attempt-to-connect statement says "So enjoy a new crop of mods on us and have a summer of button-mashing fun".
1. The USAF didn't make any mods and we would be enjoying a new crop of mods even if they didn't exist.
2. Isn't button mashing supposed to be a bad thing?
Summer of Mods and Indies FTW!
They do make games, so heh...
nice initiative btw!
I quite enjoyed American Army! - But i'm a bit lost at them saying it's a drought of games season? ..
What do you call "Ghostbusters" then? How about "Overlord II" Not to mention "Prototype"
I really disagree on the drought thing, however .. MODDB Ftw! I want to see what you guys whip up, even if i'm still playing Prototype in the background!
CAN'T WAIT! :D
something that shows off stuff that's actually playable & not to be released space users...
AWESOME! :D
looks sweeet
bring it on! summer here we come!
Guess who will win?
L4D map pack!!!
:D
Just kidding, can't wait. Its gonna be awesome.
'bout time some other mods got some recognition. Nice though.
Hey Intense.. Why is this Summer.. you and I both know its Winter where we live :P. lol.
I guessing its due to the sponsor :D.
heads up too that the Air Force Logo is overlapping the title of this page.
Well, bring it on
Should I bring a umbrella?
And good idea, more publicity is good for any mod or game!
I really like this idea it's fantastic. It's like a summer vacation TV special for modding.
The Air Force? That's silly. As if they actually care about modding. I bet there suites are just throwing money at any online community with gamers regardless of what they do. GTFO Navy go recruit somewhere else. So many people here aren't even in the United States!
They give ModDB free munay, so chill man.
yvan eht nioj
oh wait...
The Airforce and the Navy are two completely different things...
Looks interesting. I can't wait for this
Better not just be popular stuff. Cant wait for all this content to see. :D But i can wait. Got alot of mods to download and play in the next 12 Days. /click mod section
I can't wait for this. I'm entering, I only hope my mod is good enough.
oh my god that ad is hilarious
July 15th...too bad I'll be in the army by then. Guess I'll have to check it out on some holiday afterwards....
Guess the advertising does work then...
Really good idea!
do we really need this summer thing? this could decrease the ordinary moty awards fame...i donno really.
Cool. Just wondering though, your mod has to be released no matter what right?? Or does the part about your mod having to have had a major update mean it could still be in development?
right next to my bday
