Imagine, it's 1945. Soviet and German Troops locked in conflict in Eastern front, with Soviets managing the upper hand. Suddenly, Martians/aliens begun invading trough a space gate in Siberia. Stalin, not wanting to alert the anyone else about the Martians so he can keep all the spoils of war for the USSR, secretly assembles and deploys an entire army front to combat the martians.
Now tell me if that dose not sound like a premise for a epic RTS game!
I wonder if I imagined it like you did: I see it having a dark atmosphere. The aliens having sinister intentions (differently from normal invasions, which are usually because of natural resources or simply our annihilation), with their appearance, culture, history and technology reflecting that (though their history would be better left with unanswered questions, that would probably improve the atmosphere), and the Soviets' plans for the spoils.
