So...I take it you didn't like the 2k9 Star Trek movie Matt? :P
Anyway, since there have been so many rumors about Episode 7, I'll wait for an official confirmation before I'll believe it. But I don't think Abrams is a bad choice. My biggest objection is that it's kind of weird to have the same guy direct both the Star Trek reboot/sequel/prequel as well as the Star Wars sequel/reboot...at about the same time...
But hey, if this is true it'll certainly make the SW Vs. ST arguments a lot funnier.
I liked the movie itself... but the whole storyline to it and the style and the cinematography was so far off from what Star Trek is, that I think it permanently damaged the franchise. The whole alternative timeline, and the bloody lens flare everywhere.
Now I'm afraid that the same fate will befall Star Wars.
I'm myself is personally very excited. Never really like the original series story because of so many way's Lucas f*cked it up. (Executor taken down by an A-wing, space teddy/Ewoks taking down bada** 501st with rocks. Seriously WTF!)
Hopefully Darth Vader will a a bada** cyborg ninza in the new trilogy rather than a lumbering metal puppet.
its more likely to be based after 138 ABY which is the last entry into the star wars timeline... which means they get free reign over ANY part of the universe and they dont have to worry too much about things that HAVE to happen according to the timeline

Anything is better than Lucas, the past decade speaks for itself.
