Alienware Prize SponsorOne of the hottest shooters of the year is also the most editable. Far Cry 2's Dunia engine powers the incredible visuals behind this game - from dense African jungles to the dynamic fire propagation. Best of all, the game's WYSIWYG level editor puts all of this power at your fingertips. You can design your own African-themed adventure in just a few hours. But it takes more than a little gumption to create a multiplayer level that's worth playing. ModDB presents the Far Cry 2 level editor contest; create your own multiplayer level for Far Cry 2 & you could win great prizes thanks to Alienware

Win 1 of 3 ultimate Alienware PCs without breaking a sweat in our Far Cry 2 level design competition.

Posted by on

In the next month, we have 3 of the greatest gaming PCs on the planet to give away thanks to Alienware and Ubisoft. In fact you barely have to lift a finger to win them (and other prizes). How? Well we think the Far Cry 2 map editor is so easy even our grandma could make something decent and be on safari in Africa in no time. Don't believe us? Sure Dave is no grandma, but with no prior experience he managed to make a map in 1 hour and film the process, see video below.

So if you put Far Cry 2, a great level editor and quite possibly the best chance you'll ever have at winning 1 of 3 Alienware rigs, I think you'll agree this is shaping up to be one great contest. All you need to get involved (anyone can whether you are a level designer or not), is to grab a copy of Far Cry 2 for the PC. Then the challenge is simple, you have one month (until the counter below hits zero) to create an awesome map for Far Cry 2 in one of the following categories: "What the..!? Award", "Nostalgia Award" and "Real World Landmarks Award".

Not only that but your entry will be played by the Ubisoft Far Cry 2 team, ModDB and tons of gamers - so show off your skills, get noticed, have fun and PLEASE read on for full details about our Far Cry 2 Level Design Competition!

I think you'll find all map editors will follow FC2 lead. Its tough been first, but give the editor a shot if you haven't. I think you'll find you are surprized by the power it gives you and i'm sure the winning entries will demonstrate that.

Besides will you ever have such a good chance again to win 1 of 3 Alienware PCs?

"I think you'll find all map editors will follow FC2 lead."
Seriously, I hope they WON'T.
FC2 is WAY too dumbed down.
Crysis editor is ok. But FC2 is perfect example how NOT TO make overhyped game in all terms :
gameplay(boring, repetetive missions that feels almost random like in Mount & Blade, but not as interesting),
story(Get malaria from the very start and wander like wagabond to get a cure for few hours),
multiplayer(Unbalanced gamemodes and maps with no one playing on public servers) and
editor(dumbed down with absolutely NO ability to create anything but "another africa map" or at least use custom textures\models and NO way to create singleplayer map)

No offense to contest creators. Some people might enjoy this game and its editor(Maybe they're just out of jail and haven't played anything for ages) but not me.

I was going to write a big long "put in your place" kindof message but I figured I wouldn't waste my time.

Bottom line is, it may be an easy to use editor that doesn't have alot of freedom in terms of how you lay out your geometry, but if you think that you're TOO GOOD for the editor, then by all means, don't enter :)
More chances for the entrants who didn't let their ego get in their way ;).

So what i'm saying is it doesn't take a genius to make a map in this editor, it's pretty easy to do, but it does take the skill of creativity to actually create something that is outstanding.

So I guess if you don't want to enter, because you think you're too good, then please don't enter, but even though I am an entrant who is not ametuer, It would be more fun if other "REAL" map makers entered, just to heat the competition up a little more.
So don't take this comment as a bashful one, take it as one that smacks you in the face and says "WHAT!? are you kidding, just do it and stop complaining", because the purpose of this message is actually to encourage you and play on your ego's, and perhaps test to see how much of a "REAL" make maker you guys really are, because that's what makes competitions like this fun.

So c'mon, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY ENJOY IT :D

Don't you love those "counter-elitests" that just don't get it? By promoting such trash your actually trying to tell game companies that this is the kind of map editor they should all ship with their products. Do you really want modding tools to regress that much?

Obviously anything you make in The FC2 map editor is going to look good because the engine looks good and the map editor is so simple. It's really hard to make a map look bad unless your trying to.

I think you'll find you are surprized by the power it gives you and i'm sure the winning entries will demonstrate that

Yeah, I can really see the power it gives you from the FC2 Map Editing tutorial posted on ModDB. Me and my friends came up with our own joke for the kind of gamer that needs a tutorial for the FarCry2 Map Editor, but I won't say it here. :)

A good level designer should be able to make a good level with any editor. I think it's a bit silly getting poncy over the edtior. If you have got what it takes in level design, you should be able to adapt to whatever tools you are presented with and design/create a well designed map with that.

I have just got FarCry2 and I've been playing around with the editor. I was expecting it to be similar to Crytek's Sandbox, and it is but it also seem quite limited and I doubt it could be easily used for modding. I have only been messing around for about an hour but I cant seem to find any way to add in triggers.

As a purely mapping tool, its decent. I don't consider mapping the only part of level design though.

Like Intense says, the prizes that are up for grabs demand an attempt at this :P
