Religion isn't a direct cause of crime, that's the same argument the theists use against atheists and neither is valid :/ I think legalizing drugs, instituting anti-poverty social programs, instituting better education, and making prisons state institutions would help a good bit though.

Of course not. There's a lot of reasons, and I don't want to blame religion as much as other social attributes in Sweden's prosperity. I think the number one thing that made Sweden prosperous was their neutrality in many conflicts. Now that the EU threatened their economy to make them join, I think Sweden is going a bit downhill from here. Many small businesses in Sweden will go out of business increasing poverty and then more crime rates if the government won't take care of their welfare.
