The Cost of Recovery is a third-person narrative adventure game that lets you experience the different perspectives and emotional journeys of four protagonists when one of them suddenly suffers a stroke. We all have our own ways of dealing with difficult situations but rarely have the chance to put ourselves into each other’s perspective.

Take control of Abigail, Noah, Hailey, and Liam to experience their stories through exploration, puzzle-solving, dialogue, and contextual vignette games that are designed to evoke specific emotions and put you into the protagonist’s shoes. Can they all get through this together or will everything start to fall apart?

Announcing The Cost of Recovery


Hey there, fellow Adventurers!
We're Off The Beaten Track, an indie game developer from Germany and we're currently developing our upcoming game "The Cost of Recovery" - a game about a family and their emotional journey when their son Liam suddenly gets very sick. You will play as four different characters and learn about empathy and the different ways everyone deals with the situation. We all have our own ways of dealing with difficult situations but rarely have the chance to put ourselves into each other's perspective.


Over the course of the game, you will take control of Abigail, Noah, Hailey, and Liam to experience their stories through exploration, puzzle-solving, dialogue, and contextual vignette games that are designed to evoke specific emotions and put you into the protagonist’s shoes. What inspires us:

Developing this game is a very personal experience for us, based on our own pasts and the realization that everyone deals very differently with difficult situations. We want to depict these different views and how they can make it hard to get along, even if everyone just wants the best for each other. After all, empathy is key.

We were also heavily inspired by other games that made it their goal to explore emotions and to leave a lasting impression. However, we also noticed that there aren't too many games out there that take on the task of exploring health as a central topic. We think that games are a medium that has a lot of potential to bring this topic closer to us, to make us feel understood, and to help us get through the hard parts of life.

While the release date of The Cost of Recovery is still TBD, we are aiming for a 2021 release.
