On the 20th of July 1994, LucasArts released Star Wars: TIE Fighter, the follow-up to the immensely successful Star Wars: X-Wing, after a mere 17 months. It’s no surprise that it has gone on to become widely considered as one of the best games of all time: with a wide roster of craft; improved visuals; and of course, an immersive campaign with twists, turns and intrigue.
The original floppy disk release of TIE Fighter, and the Defender of the Empire expansion
TIE Fighter was followed by the Defender of the Empire expansion, adding new craft and Battles 7 - 10. The 1995 Collector’s CD was the next release and is the preferred version of many players, with the addition of a 640x480 graphics mode, fully voiced dialogue and the remaining campaign Battles 11-13 (Enemies of the Empire) resulting in an improved player experience.
In 1998, TIE Fighter was updated once again as part of the X-Wing Collector Series release, now utilising the engine from X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and running exclusively on Windows. While the addition of 3D acceleration and improved lighting was welcomed by many players, other changes such as the new concourse artwork and removal of the iMUSE dynamic music system were more controversial.
