"SONAR" is an exploring-/horror-game with a minimum of graphics and a focus on sound-design instead. Though Catherine can't see anything, the player has to use the Sonar-O-Matic 3000, a futuristic sonar device with which she can scan her surroundings. Stuck in the dark, with no hope for rescue, Catherine has to encounter that she is not alone down here...
The game is entirely written in C# with XNA 3.0, using original graphics and music. Most of the soundeffects were found at www.freesound.org.
Hey there, dear interwebs!
Many things happened since I released SONAR back in 2011. I moved to a new city (Berlin), got a real fulltime job, helped the guys from Golden Tricylce on doing the story for their game CLARC and did some kids TV stuff. Now that I have some time to breath, I realized: After Desura went offline some time ago and indievania even a lot earlier, there is no opportunity for you guys to get your hands on SONAR at all! Not good! That's why it's time to finally give it away for free. (Don't mind, I haven't seen any bucks from Desura anyway...)
You'll find the installer in the download section.
Enjoy!
P.S.: I'll keep on coding on the sequel now that I'm currently building in Unity3D using a homebrewn voxel system and full VR support. Oh, wait, that's probably worth it's own news article... Well, let's treat it as a rumour until I have time to set up a proper indiedb page for that project.
Sad news for everyone who waited for any news on SONAR+. Here are the reasons why they weren't any since 6 months...
The next steps were made to port SONAR to Unity3D: the old levels can partly be loaded and most basic gameplay features are implemented.
The first step was made to port SONAR to other platforms like Mac, Linux and the iPhone.
The Patch for v1.1 is out now and available as Pay-What-You-Want on invievania.
After Desura went offline some time ago and indievania even a lot earlier, you may enjoy the full and uncut version of SONAR (v.1.1) now for free :)
The second demo of SONAR, containing 2 Levels and nearly every single gameplay element.
Song played when oxygen level reaches critical minimum (no more than 3 minutes left).

When I try to launch the game, I get a SONAR has stopped working box. What's up?
(I should mention I bought it on Indievania)
You could use the forums ;) Indiedb.com
What system do you use? Is it the same box torvaldsen talked of below?
Hey! I was thinking about buying the game, but of course at first I wanted to try out the demo to make sure, that it's indeed as awesome as it looks. But both demos won't run at all.
Of course I have NET Framework 3.5SP1 as well as 4.0. I've installed XNA Framework 3.1 as well as 4.0 too. Yet, it's no good. I tried restarting computer after installation of your demos, reinstalling the game and yet, nothing helps.
I use Windows Vista 64bit.
Do you have any idea, what is the cause?
Is there an error message box or an entry in the system logs? Also, what graphics card and drivers do you use?
No error message, just that "Sonar stopped working" window pops out. I wonder, what kind of problem I have.
I have Geforce GTX 560 Ti with Xtreme-G nVidia drivers version 304.48.
In system logs, there's this:

I think it's the 32 Bit compatibility mode that causes trouble. I just opened a forum thread: Indiedb.com
Quality game. I just wish the enemy's screams were a little quieter.
$1.99 - Just buy it. What a unique game. The graphics suck, but that's how I like my games sometimes (dwarf fortress). Great idea for a game - even better executed that I would have thought possible. Price is a steal. Thanks.
Sonar would make an amazing and very unique Android or iOS game, but it may have a bit to many limitations or too much competition to make a lasting impression on the PC scene.
looks pretty...
