This is the official dev blog of Miuratale, you will find unfinished, pre-alpha, and generally rough footage and shots of the game here.

Miuratale is a mermaid game about an ancient force of heroes known as the Trident Warriors who seek to eliminate the primordial evil known as Corruption.

Keena, a red-finned Miura mermaid, takes care of her pods youngest pups when their routine is suddenly shaken up by an envoy of a distant Seeka city. Cess, brave and restless, becomes fast friends with the little Miura and drags her along on a journey that is soon interrupted by powerful earthquakes and strange, otherworldly creatures.

Dive deep into the endless ocean as Keena acquires the powerful spirit trident and takes on menacing sharks, squids, and sirens with a variety of spells, powers, and tools.

Will the babysitter of a small Miura village have a chance against the power of corruption?

Embrace the Ocean
A massive world that is explored from both side-scrolling angles, and a highly detailed and fully 3D world-map that allows players the freedom to find treasures, ruins, caves, oddities, and trials.

A True RPG
Level up, gain abilities, use tools, and equipment as Keena's powers grow, but don't underestimate your foe. They too grow more powerful and unlock abilities. Craft your armor, cook your healthy dishes, and fill your bag with potions, you will need them!

Fluid Controls
Experience the ocean with highly refined controls that allow Keena to effortlessly flow through the seas. Breech high into the air, flip and spin, or just casually swim! The water is yours to control.

A Deep Story
Engage with a cast of colorful characters and beautiful locations. Take in the cultures of the Miura, Seeka, and Atla mermaids, and discover the mystery of the psionic Sirens as you dive into the world of Miuratale.

Miuratale Alpha 1/2 Done

Really happy to share that the alpha build for Miuratale is about halfway done! I do want to warn that the footage below is rough, the game is very much functional, but we are skipping on plenty of small details for now, that will be a focus for the beta, my goal right now is to make the entire game functional and playable from beginning to end, and there is plenty of progress there!

Let's talk about what we have achieved so far!

1. The game has a composer and the soundtrack is underway
2. The entire main quest script is in the game and functional
3. Every area in the game is nearly done
4. All of the game's NPC's, and Clams (currency) are placed
5. All of the game's combat encounters are placed and functional

The game is now completable, albeit in a rough, unfinished state. With a final play time of 5 hours! Maybe not the longest RPG ever, but this version has only the easiest combat, no bosses, and no side content, so I'm expecting that number to jump up, maybe double, by the beta version.

It's great to have a number though, the very first version of the game could be completed, in a similar state, in less than an hour... That led to the major restructure from a metroidvania, to an RPG, leading to the total rewrite of the story, and the game is much better for it.

With the halfway point of the alpha crossed, what's next?

As you can tell from the photo's above, we are currently working on the bosses! While the actual boss fight won't function quite yet... For story reasons we are adding them into the game as static, instakill enemies.
Obviously having them modelled, rigged, and in the game is a great first step towards those eventual battles.

The game has 9 bosses to defeat, each boss is a unique experience and do not share combat templates, and that's why I am kind of waiting on them, the rest of the game needs to come first.

After the bosses we will be working on the Minigames and NPC side-dialogue, after this all of the game's content will be, in some form, in the game and functional.

With that done the alpha version will be considered complete, and we'll put together a demo area that showcases the game's final quality, somewhere in the middle of the game's story. This will be the game's official demo for Steam.

The Crystal Palace


The game's beta is really just a BUNCH of cleaning and polishing... We will undergo a few major steps :


1. Final Asset Creation
NPC designs, animations, and models as well as environmental assets needed to finalize some of the more unique/newer areas.
2. Battle and Bosses
The combat balancing step where we replace the quick and easy battles with the final ones, and get the bosses fully functional.
3. Crafting and Creation
While the crafting has worked for over a year, we really haven't 'applied' it to the game in any meaningful way, this will fix that and will be an important aspect of the game's Challenge difficulty.
4. Final UI and Gamepad support
This will be the defacto final step before we kind of just... Improve things and test it endlessly until release.

On the last article I said the soft release date was September, which, for the alpha, might be happening... Wildly optimistic if I meant the whole final game, but that's how it goes. I did go part time at my day job to focus on Miuratale full time, and the difference that is making is huge...

All things considered, Miuratale is coming along nicely!
