Legend of Grimrock is a fantasy game loaded with underground adventuring, tricky puzzles, combat and role-playing elements. In other words, it’s a dungeon crawl game.
It’s a genre that a lot of people consider old fashioned since nowadays there are huge open world RPGs filled to the brim with stuff like customizable horses, several-hundred-page scripts for subplots alone and, uh, talking dragons or spaceships I think. But we feel that some of the simple charms of dungeon crawl games have been forgotten and for no good reason too. To many, it might feel silly to make a 3D game in this day and age that constrains itself to grid based movement and environments but it actually works rather nicely when you think of combat as a game of tactics and timing. It works very well when designing puzzles too, which is an element we feel is very lacking, and in some cases completely absent, in modern RPGs. And, possibly most importantly, it also makes it possible for a small team of four developers to make a rather sizeable game!
Obviously it won’t have the same mainstream appeal as many big budget RPGs, but when you don’t have too much money you can afford to make niche games. And I’m not even joking! It’s pretty darn expensive to compete with the industry giants in their own game (ha!), so why not play the game by your own rules? That being said, we do hope that we can attract some players new to the genre too. After all it is a nice genre. It’s just that its fans have not been treated very well in the past, uhh, ten years or so… But we are doing our best to ease their plight!
So. Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawl game. It will be influenced by oldschool games of the genre but it won’t be a game that would have been possible to make fifteen years ago. It will look great, have loads of atmosphere, sound good and play well. We won’t be making many promises during the development since things will often change down the line, but those aforementioned parameters I can pretty much guarantee. And lastly, we’re hoping on bringing this game for iOS, PC and Mac and possibly some other platforms as well.
Almost completely redesigned UI, first ever gameplay video, over 60000 youtube views in less than 48 hours, lots of high profile gaming sites noticing us, web servers crashing (thanks to Notch )… Wow. What a week! The amount of traffic and contact requests we are getting is simply mindblowing. We are trying to read every email we get and every comment on the blog but it’s impossible to respond to everybody, otherwise we would not have any time to work on the game at all. All this is really humbling. We were already 100% committed to making the best dungeon crawling game ever, and now we are even more jazzed up. Thank you everybody for spreading the word and please keep doing it!
Here’s a small status update of what has happened after the video release and what we are going to do next:
Have a nice weekend everybody!
EDIT: over 100k views in youtube, thats crazy!

Is it possible to get mods working in the non-Steam Mac version of the game?
Uploaded a 10 level dungeon mod for you guys called Hotel Hades. Check it out. New spells, new items, shops, and a walkthru included.
I do believe this game has been released, so this page should be updated =)
Small review: It's a fantastic game. It definitely delivers on "dungeon crawler" aspects such as inventory management, role playing elements, tricky puzzles, varying enemies and weapons with different statistics, and a lengthy 10 hour play through. Not to mention the large amount of secrets.
Puzzles are very well done; although some are challenging, they are very satisfying to complete.
One complaint is story; which shouldn't be much of a surprise. It's rather cliche and predictable. Obviously, the story should not impede your game play experience which I find polished and well-tuned.
The point and click system, used to operate buttons, levers, inventory management, and basic combat all add to the immersion of the game. While some may dislike the concept of dragging everything you find into your inventory and the lengthy amount of times it takes to do necessary actions (such as eating or using a potion), I find that it adds some sense of danger or even realism to the experience.
9/10
