Developer notes

Fhtagn! is a choose-your-own-adventure mini-game with couch co-op and just a hint of betrayal. Play as one of four cultists intent on releasing the Ancient One. Decide how you will be preparing for the ritual, by visiting various locations in an unsuspecting town and navigating iconic Lovecraftian events. Battle investigators, gangs, corrupt cops and horrors from the Depths, to bring about the end of the world!

Fhtagn! is intended to be a short, replayable game where you experience ludicrous, action-packed and hilarious stories in a Lovecraftian setting. In short, there's reading involved, not a lot, but if you don't like reading a few sentences of text, this might not be the game for you. If in doubt, we recommend that you watch a few gameplay videos and see if we can lure you to the dark side with one our knee-slappers!

The game is also short, so expect a game to take about 15 minutes if you're playing on your own or about 30 minutes if you are playing with friends… or enemies. We are fully committed to bring out more stories, Ancient Ones to summon, items and modes, but it is expected that you will rush through these quicker than we can generate content. To help with content fatigue, we encourage players to make use of our Steam Workshop feature to create their own stories and share them with the community, so that we all can enjoy new, fun and silly encounters.

We want your experience with Fhtagn! to be as enjoyable as possible, so please do not hesitate to provide us with any feedback. If you want to just chat, report some bugs or if you find anything misleading on our store page, we'd like to hear from you on our social media or here on the forums.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our game and we hope you will enjoy playing it (seriously if you could read this you'll cruise through the in-game text).

Gameplay

  • You are a cultist intent on destroying the universe by summoning the Ancient One. Why? Damned if we know…
  • You can play on your own or with up to 3 friends in couch co-op.
  • Start by choosing which Ancient One you want to summon. This will then reveal the prophecy and the ritual items you have available to summon your chosen Ancient One.
  • You have 6 rounds to build up the required stats needed to use the ritual items, but you will need to figure out which stats those are through some trial and error.
  • You can visit 1 location per round and attempt the Lovecraftian stories at that location, to improve your stats.
  • Finally, put your stats to the test as you try to summon the Ancient One.
  • Will everyone pass or fail or will one of you betray the rest and grab all the glory?

Features

  • Short and silly events in a Lovecraftian universe.
  • Randomized stories based on location.
  • Community created content. Experience new stories from the community or create your own.
  • Replayability and minimization of content fatigue by giving new or unseen stories a higher chance of appearing.
  • Short gameplay, ideal for those downtime moments or while in a queue for another game.
  • Non-linear gameplay.
  • Multiple endings.
  • Multiple Ancient Ones, items and opponents. (Available shortly after release).
  • Steam Achievements.
  • Steam Cloud Support, to track your progress.
  • Play cooperatively or be a backstabbing traitor.

Language

Unfortunately, Fhtagn! is only available in English. We currently don’t have the resources to produce the game in other languages, in a way that is authentic and will do the stories and humor in it justice. However, we encourage players to create content in any languages they want and spread the madness that is Fhtagn! We will happily support any UI language localization changes should there be sufficient need.

Halloween Party Game - Launch of the Dark Young Expansion

With the Halloween season in full swing, celebrate the most frightful of holidays with an indie game that will both chill and tickle your funny bone! On 22 October 2018, we will be launching a new expansion (the Dark Young) for our game Fhtagn! - Tales of the Creeping Madness.

Dubbed the "funniest take on mystic doomsday cults in years", Fhtagn! is a choose-your-own-adventure game where you can play as one of four cultists intent on destroying the world by summoning an Ancient Horror. Decide how you will be preparing for the final ritual by visiting various locations in the unsuspecting town of Arkham and navigating iconic Lovecraftian events. Battle investigators, gangs, corrupt cops and horrors from the Depths to bring about the end of the world!

In other words...

This text-based adventure game boasts:

  • 93 000 words.
  • Across 113 events with 370 potential story outcomes.
  • Fulfil 1 of 24 roles with 56 role feedback stories.
  • 142 different character endings.

Madame Fufu story event

New in the expansion

In its first instalment, this party/boardgame-esque game saw the cult of The Dreaming Eye trying wake the thing of the idols, that green, sticky spawn of the stars (can you guess who?) to claim the world. Now, there is a new cult in town – The Thousand Young. These sycophantic backstabbers are devoted to the All-Mother and Mother only wants the best and the brightest. You have 6 rounds to build up the required stats needed to use the ritual items in the final ritual, but you also need to outwit your “friends” and make sure it is them on the chopping block and not you. For every successful round you complete, you get ‘Not It’ stacks, which you use in the end of the game to determine who will be sacrificed to dear Mother. The player who receives the most votes will become the juicy glazed ham on the altar in the Dark Forest. Or will they? Should you be voted as the sacrifice, you will have the chance to escape and GTFO outta there!

The expansion includes:

  • New cult
  • New Ancient One
  • Now with useable items
  • More stories
  • New game mechanics
  • More investigators

Fhtagn! Dark Young Expansion

Players can write their own stories for the game

If Fhtagn!’s stories aren’t scary enough for you this Halloween, you can write your own stories for the game! The Steam version of the game has a Content Creator feature where you can create your own stories and play it with your friends. All that is needed is a story idea and no programming is required. It is a modern take on the classic creepy campfire stories where you can frighten the living daylights out of your besties. Who remembers telling creepy stories like The Licked Hand, The Attack of the Hook-man or The Vanishing Hitchhiker? We’re sure you can do better this year with your own mad creation, by using the Fhtagn! Content Creator.

Get the game on 22 October 2018!

The game shines in local co-op or screen-share with friends and it is a casual game that will provide loads of entertainment. With snazzy graphics, betrayal is best served with a jazzy/swing soundtrack and neo-noir visuals. Don’t miss out on this thrilling experience an get the game on Steam and Itch.io on 22 October 2018!

Who will be the sacrifice?
