Doom Builder crashed? didn't save your work? damaged file or lost your map? don't panic! you can still restore it this way.
NOTES:
- This method also works with Doom Builder 2, Doom Builder 64, GZDoom Builder, GZDoom Builder-Bugfix and Ultimate Doom Builder.
- The .tmp file is auto-generated every time you make a change to your map, you don't even need to save or run it, this file gets automatically updated everytime you make a change.
Before you begin:
Make sure you have set your folder options to "show hidden files" and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types", this allows you to find and identify the files you need, there's a guide on how to do this on different windows versions on the official Microsoft website.
Instructions:
1 - Go to (DRIVE LETTER):\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Temp
2 - Look for folders with 8 random character names, they should look like these:
3 - Open the one with the most recent "created/modified" date.
4 - Find the .tmp file inside the folder and copy it somewhere safe.
5 - Rename the file and change .tmp to .wad
And there you go, you can now open it in the editor again and continue editing it, it will be named TEMPMAP however, but you can still change it using SLADE or from the Edit > Map Options in the level editor.
You forgot to mention that if you try opening your map again with Doom Builder after the crash, the backup map disappears forever
Instead of Local, look through the roaming folder for Slade or Doom Builder. Both have backup zips that might help recover your map. I recommend opening the textmap file in notepad and copying the code into your wad to see if it's the right layout. If not keep going through backups until you can recover the most recent version before the disaster of deletion.
