Introducing the ModDB Digital Store

User Posted Image

Post your thoughts and comments about the store here.

The ModDB Digital Store is a great way to give back to the site that's been helping to give you the best in the modding community to date. Of course, you also can find some of the best deals on your favorite games to boot, without having to worry about whether your local retail store has the software in stock or not.

INtense wrote: For a long time now Mod DB has operated without an online store of any form, now after a few months of development we'd like to unveil our brand spanking new digital shopfront! Our aim with the store is to bring you your favorite games, using the latest digital distribution methods so you can get playing in a matter of minutes. So check it out as we build up our catalog and integrate it with the site.

We have massive ambitious plans in the pipeline for all gamers / modders - as we work hard to take the indie development scene as far as we possibly can. So if you want to support us on this journey, use our store to get your games (much better than giving a donation right!?). And remember to keep on modding!

Any general concerns, ideas, or suggestions would help shape this great new feature to ModDB to make it even better. :)

Looks quite nice, I like the video player in the center. Thinking to pick up CivIV here, best deals I've seen.

It looks really sexy, but I was anticipating ModDB shirts and whatnot. Still kickass though. I like it.

Wow, when I signed up in '03 I had no idea Moddb would reach the heights it has. All I can say is I hope the store makes some sales for ya, and keep the site running for us modders.

I'd still like to see some Mod DB merchandise as well. I'd love to have a Mod DB shirt when I start kicking down doors at GDC.

If you say you want to support Indie Games than I would advice to make an own "section" for them. In that huge mess it is nearly impossible to find an indie game without filing through everything.

Furthermore as stated else, please get rid of the flash movie or make there an option to disable it. Has a tendency to crash browsers ( as flash player is closed source and therefore sitting on a failing version makes the shop unusable to those affected by it ).

We'll be taking all your comments on board and doing everything we can to get it right for you. This is our first foray into actually selling anything, so it probably won't be perfect first time round.

I would like a moddb mouse pad. You could make them like the xfire ones.

Well, one thing I thougt some other people without credit cards might like was if there was a way to exchange, say 50$, in a local games store, and he'd somehow add the money in to your account (or you'd get a key), so you could get games the moddb store has but the games store you just went to doesn't have....

Did that just make sense?

Like I said in the main page comments, more mod-centric categories, or even small features on moddable games by developers, to give potential modders an idea of what they want or need. You could make this really stand out from the crowd of DD sites around, and I reckon there are plenty of interested people out there who would love to get into casual modding if there was an easy way to do it.

Another idea; having the mod tools available for download alongside the game, for those moddable games that have seperate tools. Such as BF2 and Halo, etc.

I'd really like an option of actually getting a physical copy. Digital distribution is useless to me. :\

Sorry but I am no fan of digital distribution in any form except for the odd Ebay or Amazon purchase.

That site is cool though. I don't like the video though, most people (like me) don't want to waste too much bandwidth on game trailers.

So, what advantage does this have over any other digital store?

Jan 26 2007 Anchor

You're helping to give back to ModDB by buying things from the store, so we can bring you more fun and excitement in 2007! :)

Personally I don't like digital distribution neither. Often game files are altered to prevent copying and then suddenly patches don't work anymore or you need "especially patched" patches for your game store. Furthermore I want a hard copy ( best on a cd/dvd or something I can burn myself ) so I have a backup for the case something goes wrong. I have nothing to none confidence in those shops giving me another copy of the game if something happens to my first copy ( they should but more then not you get into troubles ).

Jan 26 2007 Anchor

Well, we weren't really able to set up our own distribution center and run our own factory of kids working in sweat shops to deliver you your carefully-wrapped games with the utmost care.

We do what we can. It's more of a convenience that we're offering. :)

Nice site! I'm only wondering why people can't buy games like Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half Life 2?

Jan 27 2007 Anchor

Half-life 2 is already distributed via Steam and only works via Steam.

Unfortunately, we are missing our fair share of AAA titles. Dem's the breaks when you're using someone else's digital download service. However, we hope to grow the store into much bigger and better things as the years go by. So please, support the store now so we can offer you more; both from the store's standpoint, and from the site's standpoint. :)
