Ever imagined a mod to be almost as realistic as the Rainbow Six games, but more fun? Well there is one mod here that was just released last Friday, the thirteenth, made for Quake III. The mod title is True Combat, and it really does bring you true combat. Version 1.0 includes a variety of features, such as highly detailed levels and weapons and amazing, and when I say amazing, I mean amazing, gameplay.
So lets start with the gameplay, since that’s the biggest thing about the mod. There are two teams, red and blue, pretty simple huh? Both teams have the same variety of weapons, but each team has their own separate objectives. There are regular game types such as Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and other basic types. The type you probably wanna play most is their “Mission” mode. The mission mode requires each team to play a role such as planting the bomb, or defending the base. Each player also has lives in mission mode. How many lives do you get? That depends what map your playing. The server admin can override the amount of lives on each map though. You’ve seen a mission mode played in other mods but this one is special. True Combat almost requires full on teamwork.
Basically, if you’re out to plant the bomb on your own, you’re screwed. You might want to try planning it out with your teammates, or follow others if you’re new. Another big thing about this mod is that it doesn’t use the hip shooting technique. To be accurate to real life, in order to aim correctly, you’re going to have to look through the gun’s iron sight. The iron sight is the crosshair that’s on the gun. Some of you may think, “awww god, ironsights, I don’t want to look through the crosshair of the gun” but its actually quite fun. It gives me a better feel to the mod, and it makes it different from other ordinary first person shooters. You can shoot while having the gun by your hip, but there is no crosshair there at all, so it’s basically pointless.
The arsenal doesn’t have a wide variety of weapons, but it does have good weapons, along with many other attachments. True Combat has four sidearms, four secondary sub machine guns, and six primary rifles. Each gun has it’s own specialties, and equipment. My favorite gun in the game is the M4a1 assault rifle. The m4a1 is accurate, and can have a scope attachment to it. Speaking of scopes, when zooming in, you can see the glare from the scope, its very impressive. Each gun has it’s own different animations, which are done very nicely by Team Terminator. There is one thing I’m forgetting, oh yes, grenades. You have the choice of a regular hand grenade or you can have the smoke grenade. The hand grenade is very effective and like real grenades, it doesn’t make a giant explosion. The smoke grenade creates a large smoke effect and can be very useful at some areas in levels. In version 1.0, flashbangs are much more useful. It not only blinds you but it also deafens you for a certain amount of time. Well now that we are done with the gameplay and the arsenal, lets move on to the levels, and the visuals.
Like I said earlier, there are a wide variety of levels. Each level also has its own background, and can relate to modern terrorism. There are levels that take place in an industrial area, a nuclear base, a harbor, and a lot more! Each level is very detailed, and professionally done, some levels look even better than levels that are in Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. The levels are made to be realistic, and fun at the same time, I spent over an hour playing one level called Close Combat. That’s a wrap up for the levels, now I will go into the special effects coded into this mod.
True Combat has to offer not just extraordinary gameplay, arsenal, and levels, but it also offers visual delight. I mentioned earlier, that there are glare effects, but that’s not it. There are also lens flare, and flash blend effects, which impressed me while playing the game. I haven’t seen a professionally done mod like this in quite a while. One great thing about this mod, visually, is that you can change the HUD (heads up display).
There are four different huds you can change it to, so you can make it easier for you to see your health and ammo clips. True Combat also offers realistic environment and weapon sounds, and great voice acting.
This mod is truly a great and realistic combat mod that has been released. It brings you a better multiplayer version of Rainbow Six. There is more I haven’t covered in this review, which you can try out for yourself, and be impressed with; I don’t want to spoil everything! If you have the Quake III disc just laying around, be sure to install it again and download true combat, its worth it! True Combat is the best Quake III mod I have played and I hope you enjoy it.
