In a press release issued last weekend, Valve announced a new feature of SteamVR called Desktop Theatre Mode. This mode allows SteamVR users to play 2D, non-VR games, while using a VR headset.
It's similar in many ways to the virtual threatre apps currently available for the Oculus Rift, as well as the Rift's ability to Stream Xbox One games to the VR headset. Though modes like this do not enhance the experience of the non-VR games in any significant way, it still does allow them to be played at all while using a headset.
According to Valve, the SteamVR Desktop Theatre Mode is currently in beta, and will be shown off at GDC this week. Interestingly, the press release mentions that the Desktop Theatre Mode will work with the HTC Vive, along with "others".
We'll have more on SteamVR Desktop Theatre Mode once it's revealed later this week.
This is ******* stupid, its things like this that will kill VR until it becomes a niche product for Sim players
i don't really see any "innovation" or "something new " , i can buy OR & Xbox controller separately & it's not even innovation ... what's the big deal ???
