A (pretty lengthy) status update on how things have been in the time the ModDB page has been down.

Posted by on

So where do I start?

- The PPM section has gone down. Do not try clicking the link. The reason? I got very, very tired of dealing with the community there. Every time a new unit went up, people always - ALWAYS discussed the Voxel over the Unit. Something I couldn't really do a whole lot about because (again) we have no dedicated Voxel or SHP artists. How good was the unit on paper? Did people like the backstory? Did people have more questions I haven't thought of? NOPE, it was all about entirely about the graphics used. And the less said about certain other averted incidents the better.

- Speaking of, I've noticed a lot of Mods using ideas we were going to implement. Particularly of note is Mental Omega, which I can only really call "the worst coincidences ever". No, I'm not saying they've been looking at my notebook. The case has just been really, really bad timing. To wit an example - Tesla weapons were going to be changed in how they work, dealing less damage but leaving a short EMP effect on the target. As of a short while ago, the new Tier 3 Russian Tank now produces an EMP effect. Going further back, the Tesla Coil can be charged by Tesla Troopers to produce the same EMP effect. As I've said above, this isn't plagiarism (unlike certain other mods I can name), but really, really lousy timing.

- On that note, the mod goal has changed somewhat. We're going to go back and completely revise all three factions, starting with the Western Allies, before moving onto the Red Star Protectorate and finally the Illuminate. When all three factions are done, they should play completely differently from each other. This also means the Mod will have less unit options, but have a greater empthesis on tactics that are not "LOL TANK SPAM".

- We've also been experimenting with other, minor factions you may run into, either in Fluff or (if we can do it) a revised Single Player campaign. However, only the Western Allies, Red Star Protectorate and Illuminate will remain as fully playable factions. This is also in part due to the rather audacious (and somewhat lengthy) amount of time it takes to implement a new faction.

And to that end, we've pretty much decided to start over from scratch. I did backup all the Mod files however. As it is, the Allies are pretty close to being finished. If nothing else, we may have an Open Allied Alpha before the year is over.

You were watching? Huh O_O

But yeah, I should still have them lying around. But the main focus right now is on coding. Actual art can come later.

I'm also happy to say with the public release of an Alpha version of the AttachEffect code, we can actually also allow a bigger than planned tactical empthesis. We're already experimenting with the full range of applications as we speak.

Incidentally, they're going to go up here now -

redorboros.wetpaint.com

So you can view and talk to us about them at your leisure. We recently lost a lot of our tools, so it's graphically going to be bare bones for the time being. When I find the time and place, I will start updating.

Could really be pointed to a good artist for some things though (redesigned logo's for starters X3)

Well theres a reason for that. PPM has alot of Graphics People so yeah its to be expected for us to talk critically more about Graphics than Descriptions most of the time. Don't leave PPM. :(
