In a post on the official Oculus blog, Oculus has announced that Frontier Development's galaxy-spanning space simulator, Elite Dangerous, will be receiving official support for the Oculus Rift when the headset launches on March 28.

Though VR support for Elite Dangerous technically already exists, it's using older Oculus SDKs that are no longer supported. This announcement confirms that the game will be receiving official support for the latest SDK, thereby fully supporting the upcoming consumer version of the Rift.

Frontier's community manager expanded upon how players who already own Elite Dangerous will access the game via the Oculus Store:

Before the Oculus launch we will be releasing an updated Elite Dangerous build which will contains support for the latest Oculus SDK, available at no additional charge. All of the existing and future customers that have an Oculus Rift consumer headset will be able to use it.

For our existing and future players who wish to migrate over to the Oculus Store, they will be able to get a free code from the Frontier Store (as they do with Steam keys currently). In addition, the Oculus Store will be selling a Deluxe Edition bundle which will include Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous Horizons Season Pass, a starter pack of paint jobs and a bobble head. As with Steam, Oculus Store customers will also have to create a Frontier Store account (for no extra charge) as part of the purchase process.

The VR version of Elite Dangerous functions cross-platform, so you will be playing in the same universe as those on PC, Mac, and consoles. Look for it on the Oculus Store on March 28.

This is gonna be crazy !!!! the atmosphere is so intense even without Oculus, my simple 8.1 headphones make it sooo real. I'd really like to try Oculus.
