In an interview with CNET, head of Microsoft's Xbox Division, Phil Spencer, discussed the viability of creating a VR device specifically for the Xbox One.
"We could, if we thought we had something unique to add," said Spencer. "I don't think the unique add is to plug into the Xbox One console. That's not the magic unlock to me."
Spencer is referring to the coming tidal wave of VR devices: from Oculus; from HTC; from Sony; and from Samsung. "If we didn't think any of the device manufacturers were offering that, we'd have to go do something to help fill that gap," he continued.
Microsoft is clearly not wholly avoiding the VR/AR space, as its HoloLens augmented reality headset just recently went up for pre-order. However, at US$3,000, the HoloLens is clearly for developers only, and not intended for consumer use. That's what could distinguish and Xbox-specific VR headset.
That said, Microsoft's Xbox Division does already have one foot in with Oculus. Each Rift comes bundled with a wireless Xbox One gamepad, and Xbox One games can be streamed to the Rift itself. But as far as an Xbox VR headset goes, it's simply not on Microsoft's horizon.
