Uplink OS is a total graphical modification to 2001's indie cult hit Uplink: Trust is a Weakness by Introversion Software. It aims to bring a fresh look to the game's cyberpunk visuals and a much needed upgrade to its interface and usability.

What are/would you say should be the minimum specs for running Uplink OS? I have been trying to play on my Linx gaming pad and it contantly freezes for 5-10 seconds. I could put up with it if time didn't pass during these freezes however it does, and I just failed the game on the last ARC mission due to it. My Linx runs an Intel Atom x5-Z8300 CPU @ 1.44Ghz with 2GB of RAM so I know the pad isn't very good.

I know this is a long shot but I thought I would ask anyway; is it possible to change the way that freezes work to pause time when they happen? I am just curious and assume that it can't be fixed/changed in such a way.

Uplink system specs:
Windows 98/ME/2000/RedHat Linux 6.2 (i386)
MINIMUM
Pentium 300MHz Processor
32MB RAM
30MB Hard Disk Space
16MB Video Card
4X CD-ROM Drive
OpenGL 3D Graphics Accelerator

RECOMMENDED
Pentium II 350MHz Processor
64MB RAM
32MB Open GL-compatible 3D Graphics Accelerator

I would imagine, even for the time of release this was quite low, that it should play fine. I am not privy to how much of the codebase has been chanced, not too much I imagine. I have a few questions... 1) How does vanilla Uplink play? 2) Do you experience this issue with other games? 3) If I understand how this thing works, how is your connectivity? Something may be interfering with the connection...unless the game is playing natively from the Linx. Looks like this thing is a streaming device from an XBox or Windows PC. The Cherry Atom T3 in that thing seems good enough to handle logic, and the graphics I can't speak or since it may not be your standard graphics chipsets from AMD, nVidia or Intel...

I saw the regular specs for uplink, I just wondered if the mod increases the specs needed.

As for your questions:

1) I can't play vinilla since there are screen issues. Maybe I can go back and try resolving them to see how it works.

2) Other games vary in whether they work or not. Some games don't work, some do. I am still in the process of testing which do and don't. The ones I remembee right now are that Civ 5 works but sometimes crashes, Binding of Issac and Enter the Gungeon work with slow down, Plants vs Zombies works perfectly (not surprising), FTL doesn't work due to resolution issues and Hotline Miami crashes on load up.

3) I know the Linx is designed as a streaming device but I only run games natively on it.

Hmmm, I can't really say about it's minimum specs, as I've not had the chance to test it myself on multiple devices. I like to believe that it doesn't require that much horsepower, but I may just as well be tripping. XD

About the freezes: can you spot exactly when it happens? Like when opening InterNIC's Browsing directory? When opening the Task Manager or something else?

I'll also try to see if I can do some forced updates/renders when that happens.

Cheers!

The freezes can happen at any time doing anything. It is hard to notice a pattern. However, I can say that it happens frequently while pressing buttons (connect to server, activating programs etc.) and after fast forwarding time for 4-5 seconds.

Huh, so it's not directly related to how the UI system works... Have you tried running the game at a lower resolution?

I normally run the game in full screen mode, which for my device is 1200x800. I just tested it at 640x480 and 640x400 windowed and it is still freezing. At these resolutions the game is so small I can barely see it, my Linx has a 8" display.
