This mod allows players to feature a female protagonist for the computer game System Shock (1994).
The modification provides the following:
- All three cutscenes, with scenes replaced to show the new protagonist,
- a replaced "grunt" noise, when hacker receives damage,
- changed wording in one log found later in the game.
Installation for Enhanced Edition (Source Port)
The content of the archive needs to be copied to a new "mod" sub-directory of the game's application data directory. To do so, perform the following steps:
- Open a Windows "File Explorer" window
- In the location bar, enter "%APPDATA%\Nightdive Studios\System Shock EE\mods" (without the quotes)
- Create a new folder, name it "female-hacker" (without the quotes)
- Copy all the files, including the sub-folder, of the archive into the newly created folder
- Start the game and activate the mod under "modifiations" in the main menu.
This mod can be activated/deactivated for existing save-games.
On pronouns and gendered language
This mod does not change the spoken audio tracks, so any use of pronouns is unchanged here.
The one log that addresses hacker in third person has its text changed to use she/her/her instead of he/his/him . This is done in all three languages (English, French, German.
Two further logs refer to hacker more indirectly. For those it can be assumed that the identity of hacker is unknown.
This assumption can also be made for the subtitles for the intro cutscene. The English versions are fine in these cases, though in their French and German versions, the male-default language is kept.
A gender-neutral wording could be provided by a separate mod, which could be freely combined with this mod or the original version.
This mod does not change the pronouns for SHODAN, which are mixed up in some of the logs.
