Strangelove is a mutator for Unreal Tournament that replaces the Redeemer with a similar weapon that you can ride. With various sound clips borrowed from the Dr. Strangelove movie, this mutator is definitely a unique way to play. Firstly developed by the 0fus team, it is now a community-developed modification. Strangelove is a hard game to learn. Therefore, Strangelove has never been as popular as other UT games, such InstaGib, BunnyTracks, SniperArena and more. Strangelove has always been a small community, with a low amount of servers and clans, and most of us in the Strangelove world know each others' skills, personality, history etc... (unlike in InstaGib for instance, there they have dozens of clans and servers, and there are many InstaGib'ers that might not know of each others' existence). This modication is still popular at the time being.

What is the Strangelove gun?

The Strangelove weapon is similar to a Redeemer in which the primary fire shoots a standalone missle while the alt fire shoots a warhead that you can control. The difference is that you actually ride ON and you can pickup passengers with this controllable warhead!

Flying the Strangelove missle

As soon as you shoot the alt fire of the Strangelove, you will be placed on top of the warhead. You control where it is going with your mouse, just like a Redeemer. While riding a Strangelove missle, you can adjust the speed of it by hitting your forward and backward keys. You can also activate the afterburners by using alt fire. On Stranglove versions 2.03 and greater, you can use boosts for an even faster temporary increase of speed. Do this by hitting your walk key. See a teammate needing some backup? Simply fly through them to pick them up! If YOU get picked up, you can eject by hitting your jump key at anytime.

Defending your ride

Having trouble staying alive while on a Strangelove? You can defend yourself without sacraficing your ride! Hit your crouch key to switch to gunner mode while in this mode, you can freely aim with your other weapons while your missle continues flying straight. Hit your crouch key to regain control. If your missle has taken too much damage, bail out by either hitting primary fire or your jump key!

Strangelove Modes

The guided Strangelove missle has different modes that you can switch between by hitting your next weapon or previous weapon keys. Each mode causes the Strangelove missle to behave differently:

  • Disarmed Mode: When destroyed, your missle will simply burst into harmless pieces. If you know a player is using disarmed mode, aim for them instead of the rocket!
  • Armed Mode: A dangerous mode to ride in! Crash or take a little damage and it will explode!
  • Auto Mode: Auto mode sort of combines the other two modes together. If you crash it while still riding, it will burst into harmless pieces. Jumping off of the rocket sets it back to Armed mode making it explode once it hits something or gets shot.

Tweaking Strangelove to your liking

Are you sick a certain feature of Strangelove? Fear not! Whether you are a server admin or a regular player, there ARE some settings that you can change that affect only YOUR game!

These settings are to be modified in the SLV.ini file. File names vary based on the version of Strangelove. Strangelove 2.04 uses SLV204.ini, for example.

  • Strangelove Controls Box: The box that appears in the left side of the screen showing you the SLV controls. If you have mastered these controls, simply disable this box by setting showKeys to false.
  • Rear-view mirror: This is a camera that shows what is going on behind you while controlling a strangelove. Simply disable this camera by setting showRearView to false.
  • Launch scream: Oh, the Strangelove launch scream. This is the scream that you hear whenever someone launches a Strangelove missle. You can disable this noise by setting disableLaunchScream to false.
  • Smoke trails: The smoke trails that follow a Strangelove missle can either be disabled or set to last however long you wish! To disable the trails, set disableContrail to false. If you have them enabled, specify how long you want them to last by setting contrailLifeTime to however many seconds you wish. You can even make these trails rotate by settings contrailRotate to true!
  • Impact sparks: Whenever a Strangelove hits something, it creates a quick effect called impact sparks. You might not even notice them, but you can disable them by setting showDamageSparks to false!
